Standing roughly 6 feet tall, Bernard's physique has been shaped by his lifestyle. Thick corded muscles across his arms, shoulders and back have been formed by his use of the longbow, his frame is the kind of lean that is earned by constant use and a diet made up mostly of wild game and foraged tubers and berries. His clothes are utilitarian and suited to navigating the woods that make up his home, he wears leathers and a thick woolen cloak. He keeps his beard shorn to medium length and wears his dark hair long, and often braided to the back.

Bernard is an excellent tracker and his bushcraft has allowed him to survive in the wilderness on his own for several years now. He has unerring aim with his bow and when forced to fight up close he is deft with his long hunting knife and hand axe. The axe is used primarily for woodwork, but is weighted well enough to be thrown with accuracy. His people skills have been stunted by his years of solitude, but he has earned a grudging respect from the few small towns and villages that he visits when he needs supplies that the land can not provide.

Taciturn by nature, Bernard is a pragmatist with a strong sense of right and wrong. He feels a deep affinity with the land and the creatures that inhabit it, less so with other people. His life of solitude is self enforced and he is well suited to it. When he becomes comfortable (or slightly drunk) he reveals a sardonic, dry humor and has the capacity to laugh and tell stories that captivate those who listen. Underneath his brooding exterior is a man who was clearly very charismatic and well liked before he withdrew within himself, there is a world-weariness that rests atop his personality, like a deep mountain lake covered in ice.
