Barnaeth Qil’ssaryn is the last surviving member of the once-vast Department of Commerce within the Onyx Kingdom of the Zar'Ahal, having outlived every rival, superior, subordinate, and assassination attempt purely by being too indispensable to murder. Over centuries of quiet clerical work, he became the sole keeper of Zar’Ahal’s ledgers, contracts, trade routes, bribes, tariffs, and the horrifying realization that the city would collapse within a month without him.

He slipped through every intrigue purge because no one remembered to kill the accountant until it was far too late. Now, every noble house knows that killing Barnaeth would trigger total economic collapse, mass riots, trade embargoes, and probably a goblin market lawsuit. A standing pact among the Houses declares him Untouchable Under Pain of Collective Annihilation.

Despite effectively running the city’s economy, Barnaeth is still technically classified as a Junior Clerk, and is treated accordingly. He fetches tea, files scrolls, and politely invoices matrons for unauthorized eldritch horrors. He is the only person who has ever successfully told multiple queens “no” due to budgetary constraints and lived.

He despises being called “Barney.”

He has invoiced three houses for doing so.
