"Some call him Whistlin' Jack. Others say he's the Broken Mirror Bandit. But if'n ya 'appen to sees him, dun call 'im that to his face now, ya hear. Some say they call 'im that on account o' his teeth....some ruffian knocked half uh them out in his youth ya see. Others say the bloke's bad luck, like breakin' a mirror. Either way, ya sees him in yer town, his gang ain't far behind."

-An Allirian poleboat sailor

Appearance

At six foot five and two hundred pounds, "Whistlin" Jack Thacker certainly cuts an imposing figure. He's long-faced with bony cheeks and sunken gray eyes, but perhaps his most famous feature is his ghastly smile; a half toothless grin full of jagged yellow shards that the woodland bandit is known to whistle expertly out of. As he's a wanted man back in Alliria, his clothes are unwashed and unkempt, and he is as smelly as he is dirty. Life on the run has got Jack looking tired and hollowed out. Nevertheless, when the brute draws steel, he is intimidating enough to coax second thoughts from his assailants.

Skills and Abilities

Thacker is a robber and a bandit by trade, and a particularly effective one. He is average with a sword, deadly in a brawl, quick on a horse, but most importantly and above all else, he has the charisma to lead men. And lead them he does, in the wrong direction no less. Other men trust his fearsome aura and will follow him to the depths of hell for gold, glory, and maidens. He has a tendency to bring out the worst in people, and as a result his reputation has unfortunately grown and attracted the ire of law enforcement.

Personality

The myth of Whistlin' Jack is so big and theatrical at this point, it's hard to say with any consistency what the Whistler's even like. Some say he's a cold-hearted murderer and coward, who slit his boss's throat in his sleep instead of fighting him like a man. Others say he has a roguish charm. He loves to whistle songs out of his broken teeth and is said to be particularly skilled at mimicking bird chirps and animal calls. There are maidens who ran away with him after falling in love, and there are the alternative stories that he plucked them from their castle windows and killed them after their rich families paid their ransom. Where the legend begins and ends is anybody's guess, but what isn't left to interpretation is Jack Thacker's thievery and highway robbery. He is a brigand through and through.

Biography & Lore

In the Allirian countryside he's known by a variety of nicknames; "Whistlin' Jack", "The Whistler", "The Broken Mirror Bandit", "Jack Lantern"...and his legend grows bolder with every new caper. As the tale goes, Jack Thacker was originally an Allirian sentry who murdered his supervisor in his bed and made off to the riverbanks on a stolen horse. A freshly minted wanted man facing down a death sentence by hanging if he was caught, Thacker at first tried to lay low in the river villages. But his penchant for getting into trouble followed him on the lam, and before long he'd find himself mired in misadventures that turned into banditry turned into murder and ultimately ended with Thacker leading a gang of thieves and killers known as the Sayve River Robbers.

They're wanted dead or alive for the crimes of murder, robbery, and kidnapping, though time after time it seems as if the Whistler somehow always manages to escape justice, ever more narrowly and dramatically than the last attempt.
