Born in the relatively quiet port town or Arenholm, Vass was brought up by a single father after his mother died during childbirth.

Vass' life can simply be described as; boring.

He received a quiet education through Arenholm's public schools, helped in his father's carpenty business, and in general did not get into more trouble than any young lad would. The only real excitement Vass experienced in his early days were three pirate raids endured by Arenholm.

Though during the first two he was barely old enough to understand what was going, by the third Vass was fifteen years old. During this event he was in the midst of Arenholm's old port, and when the pirates struck their attack came directly on top of his head.

Lasting for nearly half a day, the attack was ultimately repulsed by the City Watch, though not with any help from Vass.

The young man was scent sputtering in fear, rushing to the nearest dark alleyway and spending the time tucked inside a literal barrel. By the time the fighting was open, Vass had witnessed men killed and women carried away.

It was after this incident that Vass vowed to never be helpless again, to understand and become capable of defending himself from whatever threat. Through some cajoling, Vass managed to start training with the some of the younger men from the city watch, bribing them with stolen ale and more comfortable chairs for the guard posts.

This training went on for three years, and by the time of his eighteenth name-day Vass had become one of the best swordsmen in Arenholm. A title which served him only well enough until a Mercenary Band called the Red Hundred entered the town.

Seeking a quiet place to rest from their latest battle, the Red Hundred peacefully made their stay within Arenholm. It was during this time that Vass thought to challenge one of the mercenaries, a friendly wager made...and then subsequently horribly lost as the two dueled.

With his loss Vass found himself indentured to his opponent; a man by the name of Reshick.

Through this servitude he found not only a mentor and friend, but gifts he'd never thought possible.
