Tarnossia is one of the oldest and largest remaining kingdoms of High Elves in the Falwood, born out of a union of several major High Elven clans (or Tarnossë) that united sometime during the Age of Wonders. Centered about the city of Mevenua, Tarnossia currently claims territories in the north and west of the Falwood and has thus borne the brunt of the interaction between the Elven clans and civilizations of the Falwood with the humans and nomads of Vel Anir and the Aberresai Savannah. Despite the various wars between humans and the various elven societies and kingdoms of the Falwood that have destroyed large parts of Tarnossian society, for thousands of years the High Elves of Tarnossia have always managed to pick up the pieces and rebuild from the ashes. As a testament to their tenacity, the Council of Elders in the Falwood give the emissaries and Elders of Tarnossia who sit on the Council much weight in their counsel.

Cultural Overview

As one of the oldest elven kingdoms on the surface, comprised entirely of elves of the Falwood of both the High and Wood variety, the Kingdom of Tarnossia holds themselves to be the most civilized and by far the most enlightened elven society on Arethil save for the nobles and elves that claim heritage to Fal'Addas. The elves of Tarnossia are a study in contradictions. They have interacted with the humans and orcs of the north, and thus understand the value of making hasty decisions, but are also a study in patience and deliberation, and frankly, quite often inaction, which led to their utter defeat in the Second Elven war against Vel Anir. They value the contributions of the other races, but quite often will look down with some pity upon many of the other elven Clans in the Falwood for not "living up to their potential" as they see it.

The other elven clans of the Falwood know this, and do not necessarily appreciate the attitude, but they also recognize that as a major Elven power in the northern borders of the Falwood that abut many human civilizations beyond the forest, Tarnossia bears the brunt of human raids and encroachment against the ancestral elven homelands. Tarnossia has been at war many times in the past due to foreign aggression that demanded a military response, and the near-sacking of Fal'Addas after the complete decimation of the armies of Tarnossë Sharion and Ermaya were one of the lowest points in Tarnossian history, the loss of honour being something that the Kingdom has struggled to regain over the past thousand years or so.

Tarnossian society in general, however, is tenacious, peaceful, and upheld as the aesthetic equivalent to Fal'Addas. The beauty an elven designs of their settlements, villages, towns and cities are more obvious, if no less integrated with the natural world. Where Fal'Addas may have the homes built and carved literally into the trees, Tarnossian homes might be made of stone but designed to look like the trees that surround them. While the elves of Fal'Addas may wear clothes that blend into the forest with ease, the elves of Tarnossia will also often have their own beautiful designs that harmoniously complement the forest colours, but are distinct and recognizable from the natural world. Many other elven clans would criticize Tarnossia for not respecting the natural world enough, but Tarnossia simply builds alongside and in parallel to the natural world rather than building in it, a distinction that many conservative minds may not understand.

Political Overview

With claims that all can trace their bloodlines to one of the original founders of Tarnossia, the seven High Clans (otherwise known as the Tarnossë) govern all aspects of their society from within the boundaries of Tarnossia and the settlements beyond. Comparable to the noble houses of humans, high elves most often than not swear loyalty to any of the seven Tarnossë and will seek their place in society by vowing themselves in some shape and form to these institutions whose presence in the Falwood stretch back to at least the Age of Expansion.

Each Tarnossë has a variable amount of influence over the Council of Mevenua, which is the governing body of Tarnossia, where they congregate to formulate decisions that directly impact the people of Tarnossia. The house that rules over them all is Tarnossë Thalien. A royal dynasty that begun with High Lord Calenor Thalien who led their founders from the bounds of Fal'Addas and founded Mevenua as their high seat, the Head of Tarnossë Thalien is regarded as an equal to an Elder of Fal'Addas at the very least in stature and political influence.

Smaller clans exist beneath the banner of each Tarnossë, but can only indirectly influence the politics of the Council, unless they manage to eventually become a high clan themselves. This is a very long, arduous process that has only been achieved to date three times, by the Tarnossë Roniel, Pheriel, and most recently, Aravell. A few other Tarnossë have fallen from their status as well, most often because their noble lineages have died off, and very rarely, due to disgrace and dishonour leading to the unanimous votes of the other Tarnossë on the Council of Mevenua stripping the Tarnossë of their position.

Note that not everyone that lives under the jurisdiction of each of the Tarnossë necessarily falls under their specialty: there are many smaller clans with unique elements along with shopkeepers, farmers, etc.

The Seven Tarnossë

Tarnossë Thalien, the House of Guides under Leaf and Star
Oversees the task of governing Tarnossia and their seat of power, Mevenua, Tarnossë Thalien produces the finest statesmen and debaters of the high elves. While Aravell is in charge of conducting affairs outside of their borders, Thalien is the foremost figure in determining the shape and direction of Tarnossia as a whole. High Lady Lanna Thalien is the ultimate decision maker — the only way to override her ultimate decision is for all of the other six Tarnossë to vote against him on the Council of Mevenua.

Tarnossë Teriel, the House of Artisans under Stone and Snow
They are the Artisans, the designers of all that is beautiful and splendid about the High Elves of Tarnossia, and have been instrumental in the rebuilding of many of their cities over the years after they have been razed due to war. The members of Tarnossë Teriel can be found in all arts and crafts. If there is anything that can have an element of beauty to it, then an artisan of Teriel will find it. Even in something as simple as the design of pottery, to something as intimate as a the art of being a courtesan. There are many other families in Tarnossia that reach into the world of art and craft, but they tend to specialize.

Tarnossë Sharion, the House of War under Sword and Shield
Specializes in the warrior class in high elven society. Amongst the halls of Tarnossë Sharion in the northern Falwood rings the clash of steel on steel. Comprised of the most elite of warriors, they oversee law and order throughout Tarnossia, and though there are other houses that train the various way of the sword, Tarnossë Sharion has the best masters and tutors. Their way of waging war utilizes the forest to their immediate and most effective advantage. The tales of the surprising and efficient brutality of the Sharion warriors from the Elven wars with Vel Anir are told to humans as children.

Tarnossë Ermaya, the House of Magic under Fire and Ice
Most of the Elves of Tarnossia have at least a small affinity for some magic or another. But it is Tarnossë Ermaya that finds and trains the Sages and Wizards of the highest potential in all of the arts known to man or elf or dwarf save for necromancy and blood magic. They also send their teachers out to the rest of the Tarnossë to train the rest of Tarnossia in the arts of magic, be it to grow their own food or heal their own sick (though in these matters they work closely with Roniel), or be it for the arts of battle alongside the warriors of Sharion.

Tarnossë Roniel, the House of Healing under Light and Shadow
Governing the western sliver of their region, Tarnossë Roniel is devoted to the healers, clerics and farmers that make up the civic backbone of Tarnossia. While Sharion fights the wars, it is Roniel who heals and feeds them. While Thalien proclaims a grand event, Roniel is the one who consecrates and sanctifies the ground. Amongst the Tarnossë they are the largest, for they are the ones who are most beloved by the commonfolk of Tarnossia, for they are considered to be the bridge between the commonfolk and the Tarnossë nobles, and their voice on the Council of Mevenua.

Tarnossë Pheriel, the House of Memory under Sea and Storms
Specializes in the utilization of the scholar class in high elven society. The most noticeable trait about members of Tarnossë Pherial are their often vague expressions as they contemplate some piece of arcane knowledge and historical event. They are the keepers of knowledge in Tarnossia, for their memory is second to none, and they raise scholars with great knowledge of not just their own history, but also that of the other races as well. Pherial is perhaps the smallest of the Tarnossës, for their members often marry late in life, and many never marry at all.

Tarnossë Aravell, the House of Diplomacy under Sky and Grass
Seasoned diplomats, Tarnossë Aravell manages the foreign affairs of Tarnossia on behalf of the other Tarnossë, and especially Tarnossë Thalien. They also manage trade deals with other settlements and foreign powers beyond their borders, something that is not always easy given the tension between Tarnossia and the human settlements that often encroach on the border of the Falwood. Tarnossë Aravell also is in charge of managing the affairs of any elven settlements beyond the borders of Tarnossia whom the Tarnossë have pledged to protect.

Alliances and Agendas

Text

Recent History

With a history that stretches back deep into the Age of Expansion, the Kingdom of Tarnossia sprung out from an alliance of seven of the most powerful clans to the north and west of Fal'Addas. Styling themselves as the Tarnossë (or High Clans in Elvish), the alliance stood strong against other forces that intruded into the ancestral elven homes of the Falwood, and gradually over time their borders expanded to include other Elven clans and settlements who sought them out for protection. At their greatest height, their borders extended all the way to the borders of the Falwood right up to the lands that are now claimed by Vel Anir. Tarnossë Sharion in particular has historically been particularly aggressive in keeping their borders secure until the advent of the Dreadlords, who are the first to seriously challenge the military of the Tarnossian army and the magic of their sages.

The rise of Vel Anir in the northwest of the Falwood is the latest in a long line of human settlements and kingdoms that have challenged the supremacy of Tarnossia in the region. When the human city was first founded, the Elves of Tarnossia disregarded their threats, for they have heard similar statements ever since their rise as a great power in the Falwood. But they did not count upon the rise of the Dreadlords in the Second Elven war. In all the thousands of years of their recorded history, it remains one of Tarnossia's darkest and lowest moments that their army and their mages were swept aside with such ease in the course of several months, before the other elven kingdoms and tribes rallied to the defense of Fal'Addas and stalled the advance of the Anirian army right outside their gates for six years. Only with the death of Cinria Anireth was peace restored to the Falwood and to the Kingdom of Tarnossia.

But by that time, three out of seven of the Tarnossë (Thalien, Ermaya and Sharion) had been decimated.
