House Urahil of Vel Anir had too many sons. And having too many sons is a problem if they all start killing each other, so they sent one of the youngest who possessed a spark of magic to the Academy. He would either end up dead, or prove some sort of asset. Luther hides the fact that his family thought him too useless to keep around with a constant veneer of sneering disdain for anything and everything. He is haughty, prideful, vain, deceitful, charming, witty, and impossibly, obnoxiously snide.

At the Academy, he failed the final test. In a duel with his friend Hal, he lost his arm and was thrown off the top of the tower. His body was shattered in the fall, leaving him paralyzed and dead by all appearances. His body was given over to the necromancers. However, they quickly discovered that he was not dead at all. Only mostly dead. It took years, but they repaired most of the damage and set Luther loose upon the world once more, his body held together more by magic and metal than flesh and bone.
