Biography:
Born into an unremarkable tribe up in the high fells and peaks of The Spine, the orc who would one day become Bares-His-Scars was originally called Fleet-Footed-Dog, named so because of his hyperactive and energetic nature. From an early age he was always known to be a handful, and never learnt to hunt, as he would always end up scaring away the animal. Luckily for him however, he would never need to learn how to, as he and a good part of his tribe left the old way of life, drawn in by the alluring urban scent of Bhathairk.
Fleet-Footed-Dog became somewhat of a wild child, as he and his friends relished in the new environment. Growing into a young adult, he was known as a local fool, as he and his friends would always be seen playing pranks on each-other and other people, leading to a slight hatred of them to take root among-st the city. When he was just twenty-two, he and his friends hatched a brilliant plot, one that, in their eyes, would prove themselves as brave warriors. But would ultimately ruin them.
In the dead of night, he and five of his closest friends decided to break into the undercity via a mostly forgotten crack in one of the stronghold's ancient sewage pipes. Thinking themselves heroes, they found a way in, and slowly made their way around the cyclopean tunnels, but not for long...
Bares-His-Teeth doesn't remember much of the event, only a bright colourless light, and a piercing howl with the scraping of adamant claws. Whatever it was, when he next awoke he found his face and scalp burning in pain, and four of his friends gibbering messes, one of them had died, his jaw torn off. The incident left him with a myriad of oddly shaped scars on his face, twisting his visage hideously. As punishment for trespassing, and for endangering the lives of his friends, he was exiled by the city. The shamans told him he would ever bare his scars as testament to his sins, and the name stuck.
Now alone and shunned, Bares-His-Scars journeyed east, shuffling from town to town as a thug, before he eventually found his war to Carek at'Thul, and he found work as a slaver for the Wardens of The Black Fortress. For eight years he was a slaver, and a brute. Bares-His-Scars rose in rank and position as he beame ever more ruthless in his dealings with the slaves. He stayed in that darkness for the longest time, until one day, he became wracked with guilt.
Why he changed is a closely guarded secret, but he forsook his promising career and he began to make plans to smuggle slaves out of the city. Unbeknownst to him, Alarak knew of his plans, but decided to wait. When Bares-His-Scars' small, rickety ship finally set sail as the damnable city slept and was on the cusp of leaving the cove, he was ambushed. Three ships had been waiting to cut him off, and now that he had come they boarded his tiny barge. Try as he might, the orc couldn't protect the slaves, and one by one they were butchered to man, women and child.
Bares-His-Scars himself was stabbed in the stomach and cast off the ship, and the attackers, believing their work was done, set the ship ablaze and left. But the now ex-slaver didn't die, and he clung to a piece of drifting detritus from the ship, barely alive without water, food and of course his wounds. For two days he held onto to consciousnesses, before a travelling merchant ship discovered him and took him aboard. After recovering from his grievous wounds, Bares-His Scars knew what had to be done, and once he had fully healed he parted ways with his saviors as soon as possible.
Now, the orcish wanderer travels from place to place, always journeying. He used his skills to become a bounty hunter, and he is hired by governors and victims alike to track down criminals, and bring them to justice. Or, just kill them and dump their body in a ditch, it makes no difference. In this way, Bares-His-Scars hopes to atone for his past mistakes, and while he maintains a fierce and vehement hatred for all slavers and wrong-doers, he no longer enjoys killing.
Personality:
Bares-His-Scars is cynical and brutally honest, and often shows disregard for other people's feelings or concerns. Despite this he does show empathy and sympathy to those he trusts, though he is insular by default, despising his younger self's reckless abandon. He is not known for being merciful to enemies, especially criminals, and rarely shows quarter to them, sometimes to a chilling degree.
Bares-His-Scars hates arrogance and those who think too highly of themselves, and has no problem in making fools out of them. He respects those who take matters into their own hands in terms of personal quarrels, and sees those who keep quiet as cowards. The orc also has a distrust of mages, having seen many of them use their power to abuse and manipulate others, in his opinion relying on magic in combat is a weakness.
Appearance:
Bares-His-Scars is tall and ruggedly muscular, despite his age. His body is a glutton for punishment, and he has earned many wounds and stitching's in his lifetime. His face has healed since his exile all those years ago, and although it is a ghost of its former self, a pinkish streak of marred flesh can still be seen running across the right side of his face. He sports a rough, unshaven beard of white hairs which he rarely trims. His scalp is completely bald, and is dotted with burnt markings left over from the incident.
Skills and Abilities
Bares-His-Scars is best at close quarters, and he wields a great, dark grey scimitar as his personal choice. He is much less able with a bow, and tries to abstain from using them as much as possible. Spending so much time was a drifter has made him a keen navigator and guide, and he knows how to remember and become familiar with the lay of the land. A troubled past as a slaver still lingers, and Bares-His-Scars knows where to stab, slash, and pierce to bring somebody down, and keep them in pain.
