Description
To call Shadokien beautiful would be an understatement. It is coated in lavishly colored buildings that dawn an almost Victorian appearance. If the Victorian age had a bit more to be happy about. The houses and shops are often interconnected making it difficult for a first time visitor to traverse the area. That's what happens when a city is built with no laid plans. There is now canal that runs through the city, solely based on the water mages that live there. The city is lit up equally in day and night, as the candlelight from the house windows could be considered a second son. The buildings themselves are shrouded in flora and all sorts of plants. Even some wildlife run free so long as they aren't considered harmful. It is an indisputable oasis for those looking for a place to relax, start a business or visit.
History and Biography
The City of Shadokien lies east of Alliria, in a grassland considered barren besides the towering city itself. Not only is it a very young city, but it's creation was out of pure chance. The grassland is not known to be as treacherous as some other biomes on the continent. Its toughest factor was its arduous length. It would take people a long stretch of time heading east to find anywhere comfortable to rest. Many traders of the past found that to be more than just an inconvenience. Soon after many traders found themselves setting a camp as a beacon for the halfway point. Eventually this camp grew and grew until eventually architects and mages began to find it and improve it tenfold. That has created the City of Shadokien as it is today. The name was derived from the one who proposed the idea; Maltinus Shadokien, a dwarf adventurer who found a great love in traders gathering together. The foundation of the city is its togetherness and welcoming presence. The city is a democracy that votes in a new mayor every two years.
Places To See
If one is visiting The City of Shadokien there is a few key places that stand out. The Shifting Plaza is the heart and soul of the town. An ever changing array of merchants and vendors who come from far away allowing us to remember how Shadokien came to be and of its roots. If you prefer the exotic or strange, it is likely you will find it in The City of Shadokien's Shifting Plaza. The Rosethorn Clocktower is an enormous clocktower owned by the Rosethorn family. While non-paying visitors are not allowed inside to see its function, it is widespread known how it operates. It is a place that helps the entire village know the setting of the sun, sure, but it is also a very tedium driven factory. Nothing about the Rosethorn Clocktower is corporeal in the normal sense. As opposed to building a giant slab of granite to tell the time, the Rosethorn Clocktower appears entirely out of a display of magic. It is a permanent source of entertainment for the town and is ran by several mages at one time who get to display themselves creatively. This has not only increased the city's morale but moreover created jobs that the wealthy Rosethorn family pay very kindly for hired mages to accomplish. Last on the list is Unhinged Maw, a restaurant owned by a woman known as Heliia Theodric. This woman has become an renowned chef among the community, her specialty being the unfathomable amount of food she can make with just fruit, as the town does not have many other sources of food that they do not import. Her restaurant is often rambunctious and packed but the service and food is parallel to none.
Shadokien's Chosen
The military system in Shadokien is quite minimal but those among it are considered to be geniuses of magic. Shadokien's Chosen was implemented after an attack of undead razed a portion of the city in its early years. While the trading denizens wished not for guards to be on every corner they knew they needed a line of defense. Shadokien's Chosen is a group of what the city itself considers to be the best of the best when it comes to magical ability. The members are voted in by the city itself with the deeds and heroics these mages have accomplished, as well as a public display of their ability outside of town. There are only twenty members at one time and are re-voted for every ten years. While their numbers are small it is widely known that they are not people to cross or to trifle with. They are said to be extremely righteous and hold justice as truth as a top priority but also extraordinarily dangerous. They are the sole council when it comes to deciding what to do with a criminal. Death penalty is not absent but extremely uncommon.
