Backstory:

Sable Varyn was born in Vel Anir’s industrial quarter, the daughter of a stonemason and a mother who worked in one of the city’s textile mills. Her family was poor - not starving, but invisible. When she was four, a recruiter from the Dreadlord Academy came to their home. Rumours said that if a child showed signs of “promise,” the family might receive a stipend from the state. Sable’s father signed the papers without hesitation. It was the last time she ever saw her parents.

At the Academy, Sable’s promise revealed itself as elemental manipulation - air, specifically. In her early years, her control was weak and wild; she could stir gusts when she was angry or make the air vibrate with sound when she screamed. Her tutors used that volatility against her. When she failed, they deprived her of air, forcing her to practice breathing spells until she passed out. She learned the value of silence, precision, and discipline the hard way.

By adolescence, Sable had become a weapon. She learned to suffocate enemies by pulling the air from their lungs, to sharpen wind into invisible blades, and to leap or glide through the air in combat. Her body became lean, honed, conditioned for endurance and agility rather than brute strength. Her mind, however, became ice. Compassion was punished. Attachment was weakness. She watched classmates die in duels, experiments, and punishments, and she did not flinch.

Serel graduated into the Dreadlord ranks under the old regime, before the revolution changed Vel Anir’s politics. She served the noble Houses loyally, particularly House Virak, whose militarism aligned with her own ideology. Her worldview hardened under their banner, humans were the only ones fit to rule, and magic, though dangerous, was a divine gift meant to elevate mankind above the lesser races.

When the revolution came Sable found herself adrift. She does not trust the “New Vel Anir,” its talk of freedom and moral conscience. To her, war is simple; enemies, orders, victory. The revolutionaries who call themselves reformers are simply weaker men pretending at honour.

Now she serves as a soldier still, but one with quiet disdain for the new order. She is known for her efficiency, her silence, and her ability to end battles before they begin, unseen, unheard, until the wind itself cuts you down.

Personality

  • Stoic, severe, always composed. Rarely raises her voice - her power is best when she’s calm.
  • Deeply prejudiced against anything non-human. Views them as “corruptions of nature.”
  • Loyal to Vel Anir, but in a traditional sense; loyal to its strength and purity, not its democracy.
  • Suffers quietly from a form of emotional detachment. She doesn’t feel grief or joy like others, only purpose.
  • Her greatest fear is weakness, physical or emotional.

Abilities (Air Affinity):

  • Compression: Can thin or thicken air pressure to choke enemies, disrupt arrows, or crush eardrums.
  • Wind Blades: Creates cutting currents of air that can slice flesh or armour at close range.
  • Levitation/Agility: Uses air manipulation to boost jumps, land silently, or move faster in bursts.
  • Silence Field: Removes sound within a radius by dampening air vibrations, used for stealth kills or ambushes.
  • Suffocation: Her most feared technique - pulling air directly from an opponent’s lungs.
