Rhys
Appearance
Rhys is tall with a fair complexion, red hair, freckles, a short beard or stubble, and hazel eyes that almost appear amber. He has a pallid, gaunt appearance as if the weight of existence is more than his body can bear. His eyesight is poor, and he wears glasses. His clothes are second-hand wizard’s robes in shades of green, made of good-quality wool for warmth.
Rhys’ demeanor is shy but friendly, and though he is quiet by nature he smiles easily, with a warmth to his eyes. His hair and clothes are typically disheveled and unkempt, as his appearance is a much lower priority than his studies.
Rhys’ torso and arms are tattooed with symbols that, when activated, increase his resonance with the dream realm, focus his power there, and provide him with some protection from psychological attacks. His body is badly scarred from old broken bones, two stab wounds, multiple burns, and a severe flogging. Several small scars are visible on his face and hands, but only on close examination. He moves stiffly and with discomfort.
Personality
Rhys is shy, introverted, and soft-spoken. His best friends are books and libraries, though he emerges from these occasionally out of necessity. He has a great deal of empathy, kindness, and curiosity, but generally lacks bravery or purpose.
Gifted with a power that is innately invasive and ideal for spying, intrusion, and the violation of a person’s innermost self, Rhys is challenged by his strong moral character and desire to do good in the world. He strives to embrace those thoughts and dreams that are freely given, rather than intrude upon another’s privacy, except in utmost need.
A series of terrible events in Rhys’ life have made him keenly aware of his own vulnerabilities, including his inability to protect himself against those who would use his powers for malicious or selfish purposes. He may at times express shame for his talents and accomplishments, and he is habitually cautious and afraid, even terrified, of the consequences of his actions.
And yet Rhys takes the utmost joy in his magic, and the wonder found within the endless possibility of dreams.
Skills and Abilities
Rhys is skilled in magics of the mind, and specializes in oneiromancy (dream magic - see below) and telepathy. He can cast a sleeping spell, walk within an alternate reality of dream and thought, enter others’ dreams, and manipulate the dream realm at will. He can also read others’ minds, sift through memories, and implant thoughts into others’ minds. Interactions with other PCs’ dreams and thoughts occurs with player permission only.
Rhys practically lives in a library, and spends much of his time at study. He speaks and writes in a number of languages, and is well-read, especially on the subjects of magic, alchemy, geography, and history.
Rhys has no physical skills or abilities to speak of. His magic takes a substantial toll on his body - when Rhys exerts himself in the dream realm, he loses strength in the real world. Due to this effect, he nearly always walks with a cane. If Rhys overexerts his magic he loses his ability to walk altogether, and he has been known to use a wheeled chair until his strength recovers.
Oneiromancy
Entering the realm of dreams psychologically is typically accomplished while sleeping or via trance while awake. Within the dream realm, most abilities and spells are subdued or altered, and may be unreliable. The oneiromancer is the exception; their powers are at their strongest. Any damage taken within the dream realm is purely psychological. Oneiromancers are more sensitive to psychological attacks both within the dream realm and in the real world, but are also very capable of defending against them.
The power of the oneiromancer is the power of the mind. An oneiromancer’s manipulation of dreams is limited only by the boundaries of the mind, and a talented walker of dreams can easily create an object, or call forth a power, through the manipulation of thought and the use of magic. The skill of an oneiromancer is his or her ability to conceive a world of boundless possibility, without limitations.
It is also possible to physically enter the dream realm via a portal opened by the oneiromancer. Physically entering the dream realm is risky due to the unpredictable nature of dreams, and because it becomes possible to take physical damage in the dream realm and die. Physical travel in dreams follows the same Laws as in the real world, and time also passes similarly.
