This is a particularly ugly creation. I can't imagine what possessed someone to fashion an item like this, requiring covering your face in order to take control of the dead. Honestly, what's the point of such commanding presence if those around you cannot bask in the physical expression of your joy? If it weren't so powerful, I'd recommend putting it on a broken bust and showcasing it in the streets of Elbion to scare the children and lookie-lous. The eccentric wizard Grangomelle

Description

A mask of polished black steel with an eerie green jewel pressed into the forehead. From a distance, it gives the impression of the wearer donning a constructed skull. The effects are immediate for those brave enough to wear it.

The mask gives the wearer an aura of undeath, extending outward to those around them. For the undead that might attack without provocation, the wearer is effectively invisible to these creatures. As the strength and prowess of the undead increases, this effect decreases. Should the wearer find themselves in a bout against a lich or something of similar rank, it would have no effect in this regard. However, magics that rely on causing undead damage (necrotic powers) would have limited affect.

Additionally, the wearer can determine the time of death for any remains that passed within the past two centuries. However, the accuracy of this determination diminishes as the time passes. If the death happened within the last 24 hours, the wearer knows the exact minute when it occurred. Otherwise, the wearer knows only the hour (within 7 days), day (within 30 days), week (within 6 months), month (within 1 year), year (within 10 years), decade (within 100 years), or century for any time longer.

History

No one quite understands when this mask came to be or how it was constructed. However, the material seems to be fashioned in a way that doesn't lend itself to common smithing practices. As if it had once been someone's face and upon death, the visage hardened into a helm. Those who wear it might get the inkling that in a bygone era, this was a fraction of the power of some greater being.
