The Winter Court - Underhill

Rhaener Nadir ran his hand through his black hair and down his face in frustration. He had just finished a meeting with Lady Ceilidh Trahan. The woman had been running the smuggling ring out of the Night Court for over five hundred years and now she was informing Rhaener that she was leaving the Winter Court. It was on him to find someone else to take the rescued women. As he walked down the streets of the underground capital, he racked his brain on who he could approach now. The first court he could think of was the Vitae Court since they had helped out several times before.

Yes, he would visit there once he left Underhill. He had already planned to stay in the city for a few days to have a small vacation from the Night Court bullshit. Like in several of the fae courts, Rhaener owned a home in Underhill. His wealth had the lovely perk that kept him from having to spend time in inns. It was not that he minded inns, but he traveled so much that he liked having his own bed and his own place.

The real question here was what should he do this evening. Drinking, gambling, or sleeping were the top three options. Food and drink ended up being the winning choice and he headed straight towards his favorite tavern, The Lantern. It was a good little walk to get there but he did not mind the walk. It was a time to think and plan and relax.

Vitae court had received some hush hush information that there was going to be a change in who was to run the smuggling ring that rescued abused women, intel also informed them that Rhaener would be reaching out for the courts help regarding this issue. Although the court was always willing to help when there was need, and for a good reason, they needed to know that Rhaener was trustworthy. He once held a reputation of sorts that left some uneasy to work with him. Precaution was in order and so it was time to deploy someone that could get them the information they sought.

Shay had arrived at the Winter court just that afternoon. It had taken her some time to acquaint herself with her new surroundings, a big difference from Vitae and quietness of the wilds. Information had been passed to her regarding the whereabouts of this Rhaener, different spots on where he might be this evening. When most of those spots had been checked out, with no success so far she decided to try her luck at The Lantern. At least if he wasn’t here, she could grab a quick drink, maybe a bite to eat before continuing on her search.

There was a slight chill to the air that she wasn't used to, having spent most of her time in a climate that was almost always warm had her missing it already. One thing she did have going for her was the fact that there seemed to be a good number of people walking around, which helped keep her well hidden amongst them. Amber hues continued to scan her surroundings but not in a way that would make one think she was actually looking for something. She’d been able to retrieve what Rhaener looked like by going into memories of some that had already dealt with him, which helped in picking him out from a crowd.. IF she could find him.

There was no rush to get to The Lantern, her casual steps falling in suit with others nearby. Another slow scan had her taking in what she believed to be him, though from the back it was a little difficult to tell for sure. Her route had been set as she began to follow him at a safe distance. Reaching out with just a bit of her magick, just to test the waters and see if she could get any type of reading on him as they both continued on to wherever he was heading.

His mind was not guarded and he felt a prickle ran up his spin. That prickle that screamed you are being tailed, watched, hunted. He knew the feeling all too well after many years of evading angry husbands and or the guards of those angry husbands. Some thought it was some sixth sense that he had but he liked to believe he was just cautious and practiced. He had let his guard down though. He was in the Winter Court and there were not usually those who wanted to hurt him here.

Of course, that could change.

He was approaching The Lantern rather quickly but decided to find out who was on his trail before he tried to enjoy his dinner and drink. He passed the tavern and turned right at the next street. He would be able to lose his tail in the crowded market.

The market was always packed no matter the time of day or night. The perpetual darkness of Underhill tended to make those present forget if it was day or night sometimes. He did not mind either way. He found it easier to sneak around in the darkness versus full sunlight.

Rhaener quickly joined the crowd and slipped through several carts before doubling back. He scanned the crowd that had been behind him before that little maneuver. He was looking for someone who seemed to be hunting before they lost their prey.

Unfortunately, when it came to opening herself up to allow that tendril of magick to reach out to him, it also came with the background noise of all those around them. It had taken her many years to be able to drown out all the extra, unwanted, noise and hone in on one thing only. Just as she did exactly that to the one she believed to be Rhaener. Just barely tapping in just to get a feel, a glimpse, if you will. He felt as if he was questioning his surroundings, or more so those within it. Which meant he felt as if he was being watched.

She withdrew the tendril and continued to walk in the same direction as he did. The thing with tasting one's mind is that everyone gives off a different vibration, sorta like the difference in someone's voice. Because of this, it’s easier to keep track of someone with just feeling their vibration, there was no need to even watch him at this point. The fact that his mind read the way it did indicated the one she followed was indeed Rhaener.

She noted that they passed The Lantern, which was likely the place he had been going but if he thought he was being followed he’d do what he could to lose whomever he thought was following him, the smart thing to do really. Sadly, the one following him knew these tricks and continued on as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

The market was far too crowded for her liking but as he moved through it, she did as well. Only as she noticed him maneuvering in a way to lose her, she stopped at one of the carts to browse the items they had. Fingers lightly brushing along a beautiful bolt of some sort of fabric she’d never seen before, deep red in color and oh so soft to touch. While she did this, she felt for him. He was close by, not moving which meant he was watching.. Good.

The next cart had a variety of unique oils, of which she took her time smelling some of them and finding one that she just had to have. Coin was exchanged and the oil bought as she thanked the seller before moving on. It was a game of cat and mouse, he was the mouse and she the cat and this cat enjoyed the hunt.

Rhaener Nadir

Of course, Rhaener had no idea that he was the mouse. In his mind, he was most definitely the cat.

He was wrong.

Very very wrong.

The fae male quickly realized that he was dealing with a professional. Was there an assassination hit out on him? He thought he was careful with changing his face but perhaps he had grown a little to confident once or twice. Unfortunately, he had already used his affinity today for the trip so he had to wait to use it again.

He was going to have to hunt down his hunter the old fashioned way by using his skills...and hoping the hunter was not more skilled.

He was wrong again.

No one looked suspicious as he scanned the market with narrowed eyes. He was not going crazy, he had felt someone watching him. Rhaener backed against a wall by large, busy cart and continued his scanning.

Shayleigh

There had only been one time in her life that she was the mouse and since then, she’s never allowed herself to be caught that vulnerable ever again.

Unfortunately for Rhaener, this cat liked to play with its prey before getting down to business and he’s left the door wide open and allowed the cat such pleasure. Since shay was not actively in his thoughts, she had no idea that he was thinking that this may be an attempt on his life. Which was far from the truth.

Shay had taken to walking slowly around the market, taking her time looking at the different items that each merchant had to offer. She didn’t even have to fake being interested in it all, she truly was. Her eye’s lite up like a child’s on Yule. Yet, she couldn’t even remember what that was like either. It was then that she finally looked up and through the crowd just to get a better idea of her surroundings and pinpoint exactly where he was. As the scanned, she took note of him leaning against a well doing the same as she. Yet, hers would look as if she was simply choosing where to shop next, and she now knew the perfect place!

The cart that he was by looked as if it had different food items for sale, breads, dried fruit, cheese. Just the thought of it made her stomach protest in hunger. She knew which card she would play next to try and get him in a better slightly quieter place and less afraid that someone was watching him. It would be much easier to read him at The Lantern then here.

Once she reached the cart, she made sure to gaze at the food long enough to get the merchants attention. “I offer good prices and the food is delicious, what can I get you this evening?” A smile played along her sun kissed skin, just what she wanted him to offer. “Oh! It all looks wonderful, truly, but I’ll be heading to The Lantern once I’m done here. Maybe if you’re still here, I’ll grab something on my way home.” Her voice soft but direct, loud enough for Rhaener to hear. The smile continued to the merchant before moving her amber hues directly toward Rhaener, then that smile widened, and she offered him a kind nod before thanking the merchant and moving on. The game of woman offering her attention to a man, even briefly, can sometimes leave them curious enough to follow.

As she began to move from the cart, she sent out that magick again, only this time causing him to hear his own voice in his head, like a thought of his own. Go to The Lantern and get a drink before others think you’ve gone crazy. There was never a faulter in her steps as she moved on from him, disappearing into the crowd but making her way to The Lantern.

Rhaener Nadir

"...heading to The Lantern once I’m done here..."

Rhaener heard the name of his favorite tavern and his face turned to look over in the direction that the voice had come from. He eyes slowly traveled from her waist towards her head and he saw her nod at him but his attention was still split as he looked at her and past her at the same time.

There was not a single thought in his mind that she could be the one after him.

After the woman had moved away, he felt a low rumble in his stomach. Standing by a food cart mixed with the mention of The Lantern had him remembering that he was hungry. He also seemed to give up looking for whoever was following him. Perhaps he had been wrong, perhaps it was an amateur and he had outmaneuvered them.

Rhaener pushed away from the wall and headed back towards his original destination. He made sure that he paid attention to his surroundings to make sure that no one was following him.

Little did he know that the no one was in front of him and he was playing into her hands.

The Night Court fae pushed through the door of The Lantern and made a beeline to the bar. His usual spot.

"Lord Nadir!" A honeyed voice sang from behind the bar. "The usual?" She asked and after his slow nod, she disappeared.

He took a stool at the end of the bar where he could sit against the wall and survey the establishment.

Shayleigh

Shay had managed to make it to the tavern in enough time to find a decent table before he too made his way inside. The table was one off to the side of the bar, she thought it seemed well hidden but not so much that it would give off the idea that she was sitting there watching people, though that’s exactly why she was here.

She’d told the woman at the bar to surprise her with whatever drink the woman thought she’d enjoy, along with some cheese and fruit if possible. At this point, she was beyond hungry and would settle for stale bread.

Lord Nadir!

So, it worked. Lips curled into a smile as she looked out upon the rest of the Tavern, not yet letting herself look in his direction. The woman at the bar served Rhaener first, as she’d expected she would. Then brought her a mug of who knows what, along with her food. It was at this point that Shay would allow those tendrils of her magick to seek him out, see what his mind had to offer.

She’d been asked to seek out his true intentions on running the smuggling ring, if he believed he could and if it was in the courts best interest to help him. That was it, nothing more, nothing less and that’s exactly what she’d do. Now what is it his mind had to give her.

Rhaener Nadir

Rhaener was not much of a drinker anymore because of his past. He liked to keep his wits about him. Usually when he was in the Winter Court, he would have a couple but not tonight. He still felt uneasy about not know who was following him, why they were following him, and how he had lost them.

Jenella brought his rabbit stew and an ale. He had forgotten to tell her no ale tonight. He, of course, paid for it and then asked for some spring water instead. The Winter Court had some of the best water he had ever tasted. It came directly from the underground springs that ran through Underhill and he could never get enough. Jenella took his ale and replaced it with a water.

"You can have it, Jen," Rhaener said softly with a rye smile. He knew she wanted it but she was waiting to make sure it was okay since he had paid for it.

"This is why you are my favorite customer, Rhaener," she said as she took a long drink from the glass.

"And here I thought it was my scowl and winning personality," he quipped back. Jenella winked at him then walked off with the ale still in hand.

He shook his head and ripped some bread off of the loaf before dipping it into the stew and bringing it to his lips. There was a reason he came here all the time. The food, the service, and the atmosphere were all amazing. He needed this place in the Night Court minus any asshole men.

He vividly remembered the evening he had killed a couple men when they got to handsy with Sadie Lusce. He hated the Night Court so much. He needed to stay though so he could help the women. Hopefully one day his job would be done but that would be no time soon.

His rabbit stew smelled divine, surprised she could smell it from where she sat but now, she was second guessing what she should have ordered. Granted, with what she was tasked to do she knew better then to eat anything heavy; it would end up right back up once she was done. Instead, she slowly picked at and ate the cheese and fruit that was before her. Listening but not watching his interactions with the woman at the bar. Was that the only reason he was her favorite? She chuckled at the thought.

Lifting the mug to her mouth, she took nice big gulp of whatever it was she’d been brought, swallowed and eyes went wide as she about choked. This was by far much stronger than anything she’d been use too and it was all she could do to finish swallowing it and not cause a scene. That was going to take some getting used to and only small sips from this point forward.

Focusing once again on those tendrils of magick that tickled their way into his mind, a mind that was a scramble of far too many things and all at once. His thoughts seemed center in on one specific thing and she watched as a memory played back of him bloodied, possible having hurt and or killed a man that was now lifeless in front of him. A woman came into view during this memory, beautiful in every way. A way she could only wish of being.

She wasn’t sure whom this woman was to him, family, friend or a lover? That memory seemed to vanish just as quickly as it came. It hadn’t been what she was looking for and so she searched deeper, pushing more of her magick through that connection. If she could find what she was looking for, her task would be done and she would bother him no more. If only It was that easy..

Rhaener Nadir

Rhaener was enjoying the delicious stew when he felt that feeling again. The feeling that someone was watching him. He stiffened and set his spoon down into the bowl as he slowly brought his head up to scan the room.

The only person he recognized (besides the regulars) was that woman from the cart. Who had suggested The Lantern and got his mind off of being followed. Could it be her? No…maybe…

He went back to eating without another word or look. He finished his stew and bid Jenella a good night. He would exit the tavern and wait for his hunter to emerge.

Shayleigh

Shifting through thought after thought, memory after memory, wasn’t as easy as one might think. She never stayed too long on any of them that had nothing to do with what she was searching for. Yes, she was already invading their minds without their knowledge but that didn’t mean she didn't have at least some decency in her when it came to things that should be kept private.

There was one she stopped one, there was only voices to this one. It felt like this was something that had happened sometime that day and it was him talking to someone he called Ceilida. The only reason she stopped on this was the keywords smuggle and women. Talk of her stepping down and it was now on him to help these women. The emotions that came through this felt, worried, almost in a panic but not because he couldn’t do it but because he’d need help and..

“Shit” she whispered. She had been so deep in this that she hadn’t even noticed him saying goodbye but did catch him leaving. No wonder the connection had broken.. Shay shoved a few more pieces of cheese in her mouth and took a swig out of her mug, choking again.. She’d give it a few, she could still feel him close enough to know that he wasn’t too far outside that door. Had he caught on yet?

It was when she could feel his vibration slowly dissipating that she believed he was moving on. Soon Shay would pass through the doors into the chill of the night. Those long, slightly curly brown locks falling over her shoulders falling to just above her hip as ambers eyes began to take in those still around, which weren’t many. Then began to move away from the entrance, unsure yet as to which direction he’d gone.

Rhaener Nadir

Rhaener had shifted into a black hawk as soon as the door to the tavern closed behind him. He sat perched on the ledge of the building across from The Lantern and waited. It took longer than he thought it would but sure enough that woman came out. He was not sure it was her but this was the third time he had seen her in a span of an hour so he was going to take the chance.

The hawk swooped down from his perch and shifted right behind her. She would probably feel some wind but she wouldn't have time to do anything before his right hand was holding her tight to him and his left was over her mouth. Luckily the street was relatively quiet as he slowly backed her into an alleyway.

"Why are you following me?" Rhaener growled in her ear. He did not move his hand though.

He wanted to make sure that she was going to actually answer and not just scream bloody murder.

He also wanted to make sure that he had the right person.

The fact that his vibrations had dissipated but had not fully disappeared told her that he was still nearby, perhaps down a block or so but which way?! Steps had taken her a way away from the entrance of The Lantern when his vibration smacked her like a brick wall. There had been no time to react before she felt an arm wrap around her, his hand pressing her against him and another that was pressed roughly over her mouth. The only reaction she had to this was a sudden intake of air and the gasp that followed prior to his hand shielding anything else coming from her lips.

His steps were hurried as he pulled them into an alley before his growled, his breath hot upon her ear. She hadn’t fought any of it but did roll her eye’s with how concerned he sounded. He truly thought that someone had sent her to kill him!? She wanted to laugh at that but kept that need bottled up.

Shay hadn’t even thought about what she would do if she was caught before gathering the information, she needed to keep her job and her abilities a secret or it would get out and she felt as if Vitae would have no need of her if that happened. She had but a few moments to think over what she should do. Talk to him, explain why she was here and that all she needed to do was confirm that he was in it for all the right reasons.

OR

Where she’d been pressed against him would become empty, the warmth of her body on his now gone. His hand on her mouth would likely end up hitting him as the woman who was once there, was no longer. In its place, by his feet was a very furry brown fox with beautiful markings. The fox turned its head and looked up to the man before the little paws took off down the alley. There was no way he’d be able to keep up with her in this form.

Or so she thought.

Rhaener Nadir

The little fox looked at him and he felt a strange stir of feelings. He could not place it and he did not have time as the animal took off down the alley.

"Fuck me," he said as he shifted into his hawk form and took off after her.

He easily kept up with her speed as he weaved in and out of obstacles from above her. He swooped down and grabbed the fox. His talons cause her on the scruff of her neck.

He tried not to hold her too tight because he wanted answers so he needed her alive. He flew them the short distant to his home and did not set her down and shift until they were in one of the studies with no windows and one door.

Rhaener shifted back to his tall fae form and glared down at the fox.

“Who are you and what do you want?”

It was her amber eyes that peered back at him as she took off down the alley, turning this way then that, then down some steps. What she hadn't expected was to see a hawk flying behind her as those little fox legs worked hard to gain distance on him.

That was how he'd known it was her, he'd shifted after leaving and waited. Smart move and she was stupid enough to fall for it.

Just when she thought she was in fact gaining ground, she had but a split second to look up and see she wasn't. Talons took hold of her scruff, piercing her skin as he pulled her up into the air. A loud yelp of pain broke the silence, followed by few scared whimpers as she watched the ground dissappear before her eyes.

To far, they were too far up. He was going to kill her, drop her from such hights and watch her splat on the ground!

Wrong again

He finally let her go in a room, another yelp as those talons retracted from her scruff. She eyed the door but there'd be no way she could make it past him in time. She watched him shift back, a look of shock flashed through her eyes as she looked upon a fully clothed man. How was that possible? She couldn't do that! Fuck! she thought. Then came that growl again as he spoke, the glaring only caused her to back further into something, a wall maybe?

A few soft whimpers were given in response as the fox looked up at him. Did she dare shift back or stay in this form? Fuck! She thought again. It took but a few seconds before shay was, well shay again. She'd quickly brought her knees up, wrapping her arms around them and covering every naked party of her she could. Long brown locks covered a good portion of her front as she bent into her knees. "I..." Her voice cracked "I just needed to gather information" she didn't bother to look up at him "proof that your intentions with the smuggling ring were pure... that's.. that's it"

Rhaener Nadir

Rhaener watched the fox shift back into the curly haired woman he had seen at the market, at The Lantern, and outside the tavern. He cursed and ran his fingers through his hair at her reasoning. Of course she was not there to kill him and he had hurt her. He would make sure she healed properly from his talons before he let her go.

He looked her over once more and it seemed to hit him like a ton of bricks. She was not wearing any clothes. She had been before she shifted but now she wasn't.

"Oh fuck...um..." He looked around the room desperately instead of the naked woman on his floor. "Stay," he said firmly before disappearing out of the door. He was eloquent as ever apparently.

He found one of the floral robe type dresses that were so popular in Winter then headed back to the room. He stepped closer to the woman and held the kimono down to her before he turned away so she could cover up.

"Sorry...I do not keep many things here..." Rhaener said trying to not sound like one of the terrible males of his court.

Shayleigh

The small wounds where his talons once were bled freely now that there wasn't any thick fur to stop it, just smooth skin. Thankfully it was just her neck and upper back and nothing more, nothing she couldn't handle. If she didn't disclose this part to the brothers, would they still find out? She questioned herself.

Shay didn't budge one muscle as she sat there, she could still feel his eyes upon her after she'd answered his question. It wasn't until his Oh fuck that she tilted her head up enough to allow her eyes to peer out just above her knees. Stay, did he really just tell her to stay like she was done dog? Besides, she was naked and not about to go anywhere and she knew better then to shift again.

She watched him hurry back into the room with something in his hand before offering it too her, she flinched some as that outstretched hand came dangerously close. Lifting a arm off her knees to grab what he offered before he turned to give her some privacy.

A hushed wince escaped her lips as she stood, pulling at her wounds as she did so. And found there way into the safety of the dress before she wrapped it around, one side then the other and tieing it. She had no idea what sort of fabric it was made out of but by the gods did it feel good against her skin

"I would have been fine with a blanket, thank you.." she could feel the blood already soaking through the top of the dress. "I'll make sure it's cleaned and returned to you.. but I'm not sure the blood will come out of it.." She stood there then, waiting for what he'd likely ask next.

Rhaener Nadir

Rhaener let out a low breathy chuckle at her assurances and promises. He was not worried about the dress. He was not even sure how long it had been in the house or who it had once belonged to. He did not linger on those thoughts though because he realized what she had said.

Blood.

He rubbed the back of his neck as he turned around to look at his stalker-turned-victim-turned-hostage. He was really on a roll here tonight.

"Uh yeah...sorry about hurting you," he said as he looked up to study her face. "I thought you were trying to kill me," Rhaener admitted.

Yes, he was paranoid, but he had reason to be. It was not like he had a nice job. He literally stole women from their husbands or fathers or whatever male had taken control of their lives. He was not a particularly liked male...if they knew who to look for that was. Few people (only those who were a part of the ring) knew his actual identity which led credibility to her story as well.

Rhaener was still taking in her face when his eyes caught hers. Everything in that moment fell away. He has never seen a fae as beautiful as the one that stood before him. His entire being told him that she was his and he needed to hold her.

That was the thought that made it possible for him to return to the real world. She was his. The word mate floated on the wind and he just shook his head. No woman belonged to a man. Period.

“You are the most beautiful woman I have ever seen,” Rhaener said in a half trance still.

Shayleigh

She had wondered, briefly, where the dress had come from. Could it have been the red-haired woman she’d seen in his vision? There seemed to be some sort of a love connection there, or so she had felt through that memory. Was she here? It was a lovely dress, that was for sure. One she’d never even laid eyes on. Though, it was a bit big and long on her but she couldn’t and wouldn’t complain.

Shay stood there, taking in Rhaener. From his movements, the way he composed himself to the way he talked. Was he nervous? After having done what he just did and now, nervous? Where had the big bad growling man go? “Me try to kill you?!” She asked with a bit of a chuckle followed after. “I can do many things but killing isn’t one of them.” Not true.. but it was something she wouldn’t do unless she absolutely had too.

“I’m sure it’ll heal.” Her voice quite as she brought a hand up to feel at the wounds, not being able to see them due to where they were made it hard to observe what actual damage had been done, if any really.

Something within her stirred the moment their eyes met, something unfamiliar and yet inviting, needing almost. Shay had to look away from him as that feeling grew, it scared her and she wasn’t sure what it meant but it couldn’t be what she thought it was… couldn’t be.

Of course, the moment he spoke again she was looking at him like he’d gone crazy.. Making sure not to meet his eyes for long. “What?!” Confusion laced her voice “What about the redhead I saw in a memory of yours? Would she appreciate you talking to another woman like that? Or is this just what you do? Make woman swoon over your words to get what you want?“ She didn’t know he’s past or what he’d been known for. None of the information had been given to her.

“I’m here to do my job, which hasn’t gone all to well so far but I’ll give them what information I can and I’m sure you’ll hear from the Vitae Court about their involvement with the smuggling ring. I can be on my way and no longer a burden to you.” She offered. She wasn’t sure what was going on, but it was getting uncomfortable and she wasn’t sure which way to go with it.

Rhaener Nadir

"What about the redhead I saw in a memory of yours? Would she appreciate you talking to another woman like that? Or is this just what you do? Make woman swoon over your words to get what you want?"

Rhaener snapped back to reality in an instant. He was still in a shocked silence as she continued without giving him a chance to respond about the redhead in his memory.

Vitae Court? Oh, yes, now this made sense to him. They had sent a spy to make sure he was true. He could not blame them since they did not really know him. They could have spoken to Ceilidh though. He had worked for her for over five hundred years. She knew how committed he was to the cause.

The woman finally stopped speaking and by this time Rhaener's arms were folded across his chest. He looked irritated, confused, and hurt as he processed everything that had happened in the last couple minutes.

The mate thing was important but there was something else to address first.

"My memory? You just casually stroll through the memories of your assignments? Isn't that nice," his tone had a little more snip in it than he meant but he was irritated.

"And I will have you know that Sadie, the redhead from my memory, has been my friend for thousands of years!" Rhaener also did not mean to add this last part either, "she certainly isn't my mate like you..."

His voice got quieter and his body was rigid again as he looked uncomfortable at the new revelation that this woman was made for him. They were made for each other.

The way she went from one subject to another was for a distraction, a way to keep the others mind going from one thing to the next. It gave her time to try and figure out what she was to do with this situation. Leave and take what little she knew about him and the ring and hope it was enough. Leave for awhile, let things settle and then try again, with permission or stay and let Rhaener tell her all about it and if possible, let her in to see it for herself. Because we all know words are just words, actions however, spoke louder.

It seemed to take him awhile to process everything she'd said, she could see the irritation building as it indeed processed. Shay could feel the wounds on her back and neck starting to close up, though she was sure the blood her back was a bloody mess and would need to a nice long shower once she got home.. If she went straight there that is. Renting a room for a night might be in her best interest, but then, she needed her coin for that.. which was back at where he caught her and likely gone by now.

My memory? You just casually stroll through the memories of your assignments? Isn't that nice.

His tone was very... moody.. and she could understand why but was she does isn't exactly what it seems. Long born curls danced off her shoulders as she shook her head. "No not exactly.. What I saw was an active memory, it was something you were pushing through and because of that, it was the first thing I saw. I don't casually look through every single memory someone has... I don't have some respect when it comes to that.. I simply look for exactly what I've been told to, nothing more." She offered him as she too crossed her arms across in front of her chest. "Then again, I don't really owe you an explanation. This is my job, one if which I'll likely not get paid for since I've not retrieved enough information."

Shay laughed at his response about the redhead. "A friend? Are you sure about that" she quirked a brow "It didn't feel like just a friend situation." Thousands of years!? She was barely close to 500, the thought of him being a couple thousand years old scared her. No wonder he'd been able to catch her, she was out if her league when it came to him.

There was a pain in her heart and she swore she stopped breathing the moment he muttered out that word.. No..no no no.. she thought to herself. This couldn't be happening. She'd felt something when they'd locked eyes and thats why she had to look away, it coyldnt have real.. Mate.. She shook her head, her heart now racing. No.. She knew the importance of a mate and finding them wasn't as easy as some might think but.. This.. This is why Shay had spent hundreds of years alone in the wilds. She feared finding her mate and had hoped and prayed to the gods that she wouldn't.. It should be a beautiful thing, really, but what she saw happen between a mated pair... wasn't beautiful and there was no way she'd allow it to happen to her.

It wasn't hard to scent the fear, the panic that came off her by that one simple word as amber eyes looked over to him and shook her head again.."No, there's no way.. Don't say that.. please.." She begged him. True, it would seem odd and just outright wrong of her to be saying such but no one understood her fear and likely wouldnt..

Her explanation of going through his memories made sense but her getting huffy towards the end just made his raise a single brow to say really you are upset with me. It was not her fault that he had caught her. She was good and he admired that but he was good too. He was not just some pretty boy like he let the world think.

At her mention of Sadie (again) he just chuckled and moved to sit in one of the large chairs in front of the hearth. "Are you jealous?" Rhaener asked with his half smile. He motioned for her to take the other. They had things they needed to talk about.

He watched as her entire demeanor changed after his words about her being his mate. He was a little insulted but her reaction. He was good looking, he was wealthy, he was nice...he was a catch...he thought. No, there was something more to this reaction. She was scared and she pleaded with him to not say mates. Something had happened to her in her past.

"I don't even know your name," Rhaener said in a softer voice as he motioned to the chair again.

Shay tracked him as he made his way over to one of his chairs and claimed it. How could he be so calm about all this?! It was all she could do to not laugh when he posed the question. “Jealous? Why would I be jealous?” At this point in time, she had no reason to be..Right? But was she?! Oh gods..”It’s more so me watching out for another female in hopes they don’t get their heart broken by yet another male who throws compliments out to women he doesn’t know as if they’re nothing.” said with a matter of fact tone.

She’d his invite to sit, no, she needed to find a way out of here before something happened. She could tell by the way he looked at her that his thoughts were on the way she was handling all this, that.. word.. She could easily enter his mind and find out exactly what but.. She wouldn’t. This was all.. A bit much.

He motioned to the other chair in front of the fireplace..warmth.. She could really go for that about now, but, what she really needed was to go. Yet, her bare feet started for the damned chair, closing the distance slowly before she sat. “I’m not sure I should give it to you.. Not something I typically do when it comes to my work.” No one needed to know who she was or where she was from, as far as she was concerned..Shayleigh She offered and then silently cursed herself while warning bells clouded her thoughts.

"Your concern is noted but I assure you that her future has been set by her father and brother. It is a future that never and will never include me," there was some sadness and bitterness in Rhaener's voice. He had wanted to be with Sadie, he loved her dearly, but he had been shut down by his best friend when he had approached him to ask to court her. He may have been a male and like a second son to the Lusce clan but it was not enough for the head of the house.

He shifted his thoughts away from his past and looked at his future with a weary look. Was she reading his thoughts right now? He narrowed his eyes as he studied her movements. There was clearly some kind of war waging in her mind and he really couldn't blame her. This wasn't on his to do list today or anytime soon. He had other things to worry about that did not include women, love, and mates.

Rhaener watched as she finally sat and he thought for a second that she would actually withhold her name from him. She was quite rude.

"Shayleigh," he repeated with a wistful smile. It was a beautiful name.

"What do you want to know, Shayleigh?" Rhaener tested her name out with the question.
