Alliria - Grand Crescent Hotel

Liliana slowly painted the color upon her lips, staring into the mirror with a satisfied smile.

There was something so utterly wonderful about being herself.

She couldn't even remember the last time she had actually been allowed to dress up. When the chains of the Academy hadn't wrapped her in a thousand different restrictions she had to follow. There was something to utterly joyous, sustaining, in being herself. She peered into the mirror, smiling as she observed the made up and perfect face looking back at her.

So much better. Liliana thought to herself, plucking one last little piece of color as she turned away from the mirror.

It had been days since their time away from Vel Anir.

Cousin Elise had reached out to the Academy, spoken to some of the Proctors and told them of her mission. Ostensibly they were here to form better relations with one of the Councilors, but the truth of the matter was so much more delicious. That was why she had taken Evie along with her, because she had known her true purpose here would be so much easier with her friend at her side.

She blinked at the mirror happily one more time, then slowly stood from her seat. With no small amount of swagger she sauntered across the room. "What do you think?"

Liliana asked her 'friend' as she walked up behind her, smiling into the mirror.

Everleigh felt out of place, which was an understatement. And while she could keep a mellow expression, she caught herself openly hesitating as she looked at a mirror. At herself. She could lament over the fact that she used to be really pretty— not as much as Liliana, of course, but she had had lovely features.

Now she only ever got comments on how unusual her hair and her eyes were. But for tonight, a spell had been used, a momentary glamor that gave Everleigh back her black hair and gray eyes. Yes, she had had nice features years ago. And then Liliana appeared.

You look stunning, as always.” Everleigh said, happy to stop looking at herself and thinking about how abnormal she usually looked. Also, by now, Everleigh understood that Liliana was almost always looking for compliments. Although the compliment was genuine, Liliana was radiant. She was in her element, unlike Evie.

Although, Everleigh was technically on a mission. With Liliana. And that was the biggest shock of all because somehow, Liliana had picked her specifically. Everleigh could understand there was something more important going on than looking pretty and making connections.

I couldn’t attend the Solstice Ball because I was sick,” a lie, she had been in her room on the verge of death but that was as common as catching a cold to her now, “but I guess this is how the other initiates must have felt.” Awkward. Uncomfortable. Human. A feeling she hadn’t felt in a long time— she’d almost forgotten what it was like.

Reactions: Liliana
"Nonsense." Liliana said as she peered into the mirror at her friend.

There was a brightness to her expression, genuine joy that was rarely present upon the nobles features. She seemed entirely in her element in a place like this. The Grand Crescent was very nearly the nicest hotel in Alliria, a fact which showed in the gold and silks that adorned their rooms.

"That ball was a squabble of peasants and dullards." The Noble announced. She had not been able to attend either. Her and some of the others had been sent off to Cortos at the time. A mission that turned out very succesful.

Though not in the way the Republic had intended "This is something to look forward to Evie."

As Liliana spoke, she twirled her fingers ever so slightly, just out of Everleigh's view.

Her magic cast outward, a weave gently thrown over her companions mind. Not an ounce of control, but a thrill of excitement, a trickle of joy. That was all. Just a little help to cut the nerves.

They were here to have a good time after all, oh, and kill a man.

"There will be food, wine, men and women worshiping at our feet." Liliana mused. "This is a slice of the life we deserve. You should revel in it."

She announced with a smile.

Everleigh could notice the difference in Liliana’s demeanor, especially when compared to how she was at the academy. She glanced at her as she spoke about the Solstice Ball and shrugged. To be fair, it sounded like the ball hadn’t gone as planned.

A stiff nod, she tried to relax her shoulders but it wasn’t until a moment later that Everleigh felt like she could actually feel more at peace. Liliana was right, this was a experience she would most likely never get again. She should enjoy herself.

A butcher’s daughter to dreadlord initiate to now playing dress up and pretend.

You’re right.” Everleigh said, a smile appearing much easier than before. She looked at herself in the mirror again, and the familiar looking face feeling more like her own. “Thank you.” She added quietly before turning around, her long dark tresses swaying with her movement.

Have you been at this hotel before?” In truth, Everleigh had only heard of the Grand Crescent a handful of times. It was a place she never thought she would ever see, and she was looking forward to hopefully exploring some of it’s grandness. When there was time to dally, of course.

Reactions: Liliana
Liliana shook her head, deciding that from now on a bit of honesty would prepare Evie better than anything else. She smiled at her companion, pulling back away from the mirror as she let her hair flow over her shoulder.

"No, I've not been to Alliria for quite some time." Near enough a decade.

She was seventeen now, and the last time she had been within this city of merchants she had been eight. Her parents had taken her here just before she had been given to the Academy by order of House Virak. She could remember the trip well enough.

They had stayed in her families estate here, not a hotel. "We'll have to explore after the Gala."

She offered.

"I know there is a spa, and some sort of...hot spring down below." Beneath the hotel in the caverns, she'd heard. "Something else to look forward to."

Liliana mused. "After we take care of our little...project."

Reactions: Everleigh Ebersol
Everleigh figured as much that Liliana hadn’t been here in some time, not like the academy allowed the initiates to go on fancy field trips or to even visit their family during holiday seasons. And in all honesty, Everleigh wasn’t really sure what sort of life noble children had.

At least, what she had seen with Kristen, it must have been one that made people soft. Whether she was a dreadlord initiate or not, Everleigh would never know a “soft” life. Even now, she was more like an observer, a shadow to Liliana.

Hot spring?” Everleigh spoke up, her eyes having a slight glimmer to them much like a dog when it heard the word ‘walk.’ Really, the fact that Liliana herself brought up the idea to explore the gala already had Everleigh quite hopeful.

It’ll be a slice of cake. Unlike the last mission,” Everleigh said, grinning a bit to herself. A very fond memory for her now, even if she did pass out in the end. Thank goodness Liliana was capable. “Hopefully no creepy cult to ruin our plans.

Reactions: Liliana
"Oh there won't be any cults." Liliana sounded as confident as a cat prowling at the edge of a countertop.

She had plucked Everleigh for this mission for a reason.

The Noble knew that she was reliable. Knew that with the slightest push she could be nudged in the direction that she desired. The girl wasn't easily to manipulate, at least not any more so than the other apprentices. What mattered was that she didn't care.

Like some of the others in Liliana's care Evie didn't mind a death or two, and that was what truly mattered to her. "It will go swimmingly."

She assured Everleigh.

"Just remember." Liliana said with a smile. "We'll just need a touch of your venom."

Slowly she threaded her fingers through Everleigh's hair. "When I say."

A smile touched her features. "Then we can enjoy our time."

Surprisingly, she really meant that last bit. Once Cousin Elise had her will done, the rest of the time was theirs, and she intended to enjoy it fully.

Everleigh nodded her head at Liliana’s words, although she wondered if a cult would be better? That was something she could handle, but this… she glanced over at Liliana. No, she had Liliana. Just follow her lead, copy her, and she would be fine.

Besides, really, this was a mission. And she wouldn’t dare to let Liliana down. Not when she offered to go exploring afterwards! And Evie really did want to check out those hot springs.

The poison eater flinched slightly at the fact that she was being touched. It was strange yet comforting all at once. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been touched purposely since Liliana— perhaps when she was five and leaving her parents side, but the moment knowledge of her magic surfaced, people tended to keep their distance. However, a slight blush appeared, not one suggesting anything romantic but rather a sense of embarrassment.

I look forward to it. Before and after the poisoning,” Evie said, and nodded once more. “Did you want any sort of specific time frame?

Reactions: Liliana
She mused for a moment. "Something fast."

Liliana knew exactly who their target would be, and she knew exactly where he would be. The man was a bit of a scoundrel from what she heard, something that she fully intended on using against him. Of course she would have to keep some distance, but that would be alright.

"Something topical." Liliana said. "A poison that would numb the lips, but kill with a kiss."

If anyone was capable of doing something like that, it was Evie.

There was a reason that she had wanted her along instead of someone else. She knew plenty of Dreadlords who could have rent the man's heart, stabbed him in the throat. Kill in any number of ways, but she wanted this to be painful. To hurt, and to look bad.

"I'll see that it's applied." She told Evie with a smile.

Fast? Check. Topical? Check. Numbing the lips and kill with— wait, what? Everleigh blanched for a second, realizing what Liliana was implying. She wouldn’t admit this, but she felt relief realizing that Liliana was going to do the kissing. Despite many initiates already having experienced a “physical awakening” as some proctors like to call it (better than ‘the initiates are getting horny’ the poison eater supposed) Everleigh had yet to experience anything like it.

And that was often because of rumors. People always gave her so much space if they knew of her, and even to this day she could count on one hand who had touched her and was still alive today: Edric, Liliana, Liza, and unfortunately Proctor Palahniuk. But in the poison eater’s defense the majority of people she had touched had been in combat! It was to be expected, really.

But was Liliana really going to… kiss someone? Did she know how to? Who had taught her?

So something like Trix’s lipstick?” Evie responded, grinning a bit. “But untraceable and more potent?” Already different formula were arising in her head. She could’ve asked Liliana about what she wanted to happen, but the fact that Liliana didn’t already told her meant that it was free-reign for the poison eater. And she had lots of fun ideas to try it.

"Exactly like that." Liliana said with a nod of her head and a smile.

She had considered bringing Trix along, but had ultimately decided against it. Her other task was in the name of Cousin Elise, head of House Virak. Trixie was a noble, and she was smart. Not that Everleigh wasn't, but she simply didn't know how things were done.

Most Initiates didn't

The game of Houses was supposedly gone, but no one would ever let it truly die. "Can you do that?"

Liliana said, letting her hand gently caress over Everleigh's hair, passing over it as though she were adjusting it around the other girls dress. They both needed to look good after all.

"I have a lipstick." The Noble said with a smile, producing the small golden tube. "Could you apply it to this?"

Reactions: Everleigh Ebersol
Of course.” Everleigh said, a hint of eagerness. It wasn’t that Everleigh didn’t like Trix, but she’d be lying if she said she didn’t enjoy besting someone who was in the same vein of her magic. And had questionable fashion tastes. Besides, their outward personalities didn’t really click either. And here Evie was, ready to end Trix’s entire career of poison lipsticks with one that would be so great and perfect. And only for Liliana to use.

Another small tint of red appeared on Evie’s cheeks as Liliana repositioned her hair. It had taken some time for it to be styled the way it was, after all, her hair was so long. But she didn’t mind the fact that Liliana had taken charge of that too. Perhaps she was due for a haircut? Maybe when she got back to the academy she’d cut a couple feet off.

She took the lipstick, pursing her lips in thought. The issue with her magic was that while it hardly affected her, it often affected others, even those who were on her side. And obviously, she wouldn’t want Liliana to be poisoned. Which was why Everleigh had learned how to activate and accelerate her toxicity, even on a certain creature before affecting a different one.

She glanced at Liliana, and offered a sheepishly smile before saying, “You realize what I need to do… to apply it onto here… right?” Many found it gross, and if Everleigh could still feel shame, perhaps she would to. But it was necessary, and honestly the least taxing on her abilities. Her eyes glowed gold, ready to apply. Although she wondered if she should turn around, just so Liliana wouldn’t have to see.

Oh it was gross. There was absolutely no questioning that, but Liliana didn't intend to use the Lipstick herself.

Layers of abstraction were required with this sort of thing.

If she did the deed herself she would immediately be suspected. That was why she would convince one of the other girls at the party to be helpful in her cause. It would require a bit of a push, perhaps even a small weave, but not too much effort on her part. "Do what you need to, Evi."

She mused.

"As long as it works." Liliana had every confidence that she would, and as she settled the other woman's hair into place she turned around. "I'll settle our carriage and see that the steward is ready."

The Noble explained. "I want nothing but the best for us."

Everything had to go perfectly tonight, elsewise they might not make it out of Alliria alive.

Eyes glowing gold, Everleigh licked the pad of her index finger, and then thinking better of it, stuck it into her mouth. When she pulled it out, she wiped the finger along the lipstick and then blew on it, eyes glowing purple instead as another layer of toxins were unleashed onto the lipstick. The top layer was the numbing effect, might even make the wearer feel a sense of increase happiness or pleasure much like alcohol. The inner layer was the true deadly poison, and would be activated the moment it touched liquid and could spread by a single inhale.

Really, it was genius. But what would one expect? She was Everleigh Ebersol and what she lacked in raw power she made up for it tenfold with her intelligence and creativity.

Besides, only the best for Liliana who— and Everleigh would never admit such a thing to a single soul— really was quite good at playing with hair to relax someone. Everleigh was vain about only a few things, namely a scent she had concocted for herself, and how long her hair was. Proof that she was a force to be reckoned with, even with long hair that many thought would debilitate her.

She closed the lipstick, capping it carefully and then followed after Liliana. Confident in her abilities, Everleigh could count on the fact that the poison was as fatal as it was painful. The only thing she would need to worry about was that she could keep up Liliana and not embarrass her.

It was not long before the two girls took to the stairs of the hotel, padding downward until a steward opened the front door of the hotel for them.

Already waiting was a carriage of gilded oak and mahogany, it's carved features representing the lap of luxury. A man stood besides the open door, his eyes downcast as he waited for the them. Liliana glanced over towards Evie. "I think you'll remember this night."

She mused.

"No." Liliana corrected herself. "I'm going to make sure that you do, Evie."

Her words were a slowly spun web. Though her magic was effective in trapping people, that was not all there was to it. She was weak, at least weaker than some of the other Dreadlords back home. Her magic was not the strongest outwardly, but the fact of who she was, the promises she could make...that had far more strength than most imagined.

There was a reason that Jaxan, Trix, Ignatius followed her. There was a reason that even Del heeded her words. Liliana had her own enticements.

She would see Everleigh fall to them too. "Come come."

Liliana urged, taking the lipstick from her friend and guiding her into the plush and luxurious carriage. The seats were made of feather stuffed cushions, the backs of the same. To the side sat a bottle of Dornoch wine, two glasses already chilled and prepared.

Without waiting for a word Liliana began to pour, smiling as the carriage slightly jerked and headed off to wind through Alliria.

Everleigh gaped for a moment at the carriage before them. It just… didn’t make sense. She almost wished there wasn’t that man there so that way she could have opened the door. The wood looked incredibly smooth, and even though Evie had very little knowledge of woodworking, even she understood the immaculate artistry of the carriage itself. But the inside was even better than the outside!

She had never been one for luxury, how could you want for something that you never knew, but as she sat down on the plush velvet seats, she couldn’t help but compare how different this was to a wooden bench. Everleigh tilted her head at the bottle of wine. People… drank in carriages? Well, she supposed it made sense, after all as she glanced to the side, it wasn’t like anyone could see them, could they?

It was like at this moment they were in their own little world as everything else around them would just be a blur. Evie glanced down again at her attire, hands flat on the seat, fingers spreading about to feel the soft seat.

There’s no need to waste the wine on me,” she said softly, “I don’t like drinking while on the job.” Dutiful. It was a good trait to have, and hadn’t gone unnoticed by proctors. Of course, she had to be dutiful, needed a repertoire of “good character” from anyone in power to beef up her resume. But also, this was more so to protect Liliana. Everleigh hadn’t had alcohol before, at least not a full sip, and she wasn’t sure what the effects would be.

"Evie." Liliana chastised almost instantly.

Being dutiful was all well and good, in fact most of the Proctors back home likely would have praised the girl for even saying what she had. Yet this was not the Academy, and Liliana's mission here was two fold. Yes, she would carry out Elise's will, but she would also gain a new ally.

Permanently. "Your job is already done."

The Noble assured her companion.

"You've done what I've asked you to." Her smile grew soft as she pointedly poured the second glass of wine. Holding both deftly in one hand as she placed the bottle back into the iced container. "The only thing you have to do now is enjoy yourself."

Liliana assured the girl taking the second glass into her hand and offering it to her. "Let me worry about the rest."

This was what she did best after all.

Reactions: Everleigh Ebersol
Unlike when the proctors lectured her, Evie actually looked a bit disappointed. Surprising that Liliana’s gentle chastising struck a chord better than proctors yelling or punishing her. Hell, it worked better than the box. A brief moment of hesitance flashed in the young woman’s eyes, and she looked at Liliana for a moment. She took in the soft look in her eyes, the serene way she was smiling now.

Was Everleigh going to trust Liliana over her own instincts?

It was such a strange thought to the initiate, to trust someone over herself. She could feel that inner voice nagging her how irresponsible that was before a much louder, more powerful voice overcame that nagging. It was dangerous to trust someone else, wasn’t it? To let go of oneself and allow the other to hold the strings. And danger… well, Evie loved danger. She could never say no to it.

I suppose you’re right.” She said, reaching for the glass and admiring the color of the wine before bringing it up to her lips and inhaling the powerful scent. “But next time, let me pour your glass. From here on out. You’re the noble, and it feels… wrong that you’d pour mine.” She finished. It was a half-truth, or a mostly true-truth. And then the poison eater took a sip, and immediately recoiled for a brief second. She hadn’t been expecting that.

Yet she took another sip, after all, she wasn’t going to back down just because wine smelled sweet yet tasted so completely different. The academy hadn’t raised her to be a wuss.

"Don't you worry yourself." Liliana mused out loud as she leaned back upon the bench. "Servants will be pouring both our drinks for the rest of the night."

It wasn't untrue.

Back in Vel Anir they would have had someone with them in the carriage too, but...well one couldn't have every luxury. Least not in a situation like this. The noble smiled slightly as Everleigh recoiled from the taste of the wine, but said nothing.

Liliana herself indulged within the taste, a sensation of warmth and comfort drawing over her.

This was what her life should have been. Even without the Revolution, even without the Academy, she would have lived in the lap of luxury. House Lorel was not a Great House, but it still had money, power, and more importantly influence.

These little glimpses of what her life could have been were like a life-boat. Something to keep her going until graduation finally came.

It didn't take long for the carriage to make it's way from the hotel over to the Palace. The journey took all but ten minutes, and when they arrived Liliana had all but finished her glass of wine. "Now remember, Evie. We are here to mingle, entrance, and enjoy. As far as these people understand we are nobles of Vel Anir, and that is all they need to know."

She smiled.

"Let's see if we can't break a few hearts." Liliana said as the steward went to open their door. "No?"

Everleigh nodded her head as Liliana spoke, slowly nursing her glass of wine. Really, in the back of her mind, she did wonder why she would be chosen to even tag along. Technically, Everleigh supposed she owed Liliana a favor, and without knowing the details, she would’ve poisoned the lipstick. But she knew the details, and was even accompanying Liliana. A part of her wondered if this was how Liliana planned on getting rid of her. Or at least trying to getting rid of her.

Especially if Liliana was suggesting they were supposed to… flirt.

I’m used to breaking noses not hearts,” Everleigh said, but the smile and gleam of mirth in her eyes showed it was a joke, not an objection. “But if I still looked like this,” she said, gesturing to her obsidian tresses and bright gray eyes, “I’m sure I’d be eating men for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” The glass was set down, halfway full, and Everleigh followed after Liliana.

And then as was required of any one who wanted to be a serious gambler, the facade was up. Despite her hesitation earlier, Everleigh walked with all the confidence and assurance as if she were Liliana— and perhaps she was imitating the young woman. Her back was straight and yet even in a dress, Everleigh’s footsteps were silent, the sense of poise and balance about her was graceful but if one stared too long they may have felt unease. Her face may have been angelic and honey-sweet, but even now, the poison eater would radiate a innate, subconsciously instinctive message to all: to think twice.

"The glamor is a shame, really" Liliana mused as they stepped onto the red carpet waiting for them. "Sometimes, uniqueness is more of an asset than you might imagine."

She mused for a moment and then shook her head. "Perhaps next time."

Liliana gently shifted her dress, ensuring that it was position just right, and then began to make her way up the steps of the palace.

The building before them was an ostentatious thing, built with a bright limestone and with dozens of carvings and tapestries hanging everywhere. There was no history to it's architecture, save for what had been deliberately placed there.

It was clearly a rich man attempting to emulate something more ancient, more grand than he could ever actually be.

"Lady Lorel, so glad that you could make it."

Two men stood at the door, one holding a small board with a piece of paper, the other dressed like he thought himself a king. "Councilor. My cousin was sorry she could not make it herself, but the head of a house cannot simply leave the city at this time."

The rich man nodded.

"Of course of course, I'm simply pleased to have such...lovely representatives."

He glanced towards Everleigh.

"And we are both delighted to be here." She mused, then glanced at Evie. "Shall we? I am eager to try some of the delights of your city, Councilor."

The man nodded. Though it was clear that he held some disdain. Liliana had not waited to be invited in, had not waited for him to offer. A small play of power, an important one.

"Yes please, head right on in."

Liliana smiled, and then swept through the open doors.

Everleigh shrugged at Liliana’s comment, but averted her gaze, feeling the heat return to her cheeks again. Did Liliana actually… like her violet hair? No one had ever complimented it before, and Evie didn’t blame them. It was weird. It was strange. It was completely unnatural. It made so many stay away from her, or even look at her, suggest she wasn’t human. Half elf? Half fae? Half of something that was not Anirian, not human.

She was glad that when she was at Liliana’s side upon meeting the Councilor, the blush was gone. She was focused once more, and made sure the demure smile revealed nothing but a innocent appearance. An easy contrast to Liliana’s bold nature, a sense of balance between the two of them. She glanced at how Liliana invited herself in, and Evie dipped her head in the councilor’s direction before following after her blonde friend.

The grandeur of the palace, however fake it may be, still impressed Everleigh immensely. There was something about the tapestries and the vivid scenes brought to life by the bright, richly pigmented threads. Carvings of animals and beasts, warriors and heroes, kings and queens were still beautiful in Everleigh’s mind.

And the way everyone was dressed. Everleigh couldn’t comprehend such finery on just a single person, but tonight it seemed everyone wore jewels that could compete with the stars, dresses and suits in all sorts of stunning styles, emphasizing a fashion that Everleigh didn’t understand but knew was beautiful.

The poison eater did her best to not stare at anything or anyone too long. Last thing she wanted to look like was some country bumpkin. Which, as the daughter of a butcher, she was. But she didn’t want to look like it.

Those already inside the party could have bought several villages in the surrounding area simply with the expense of their dress. Each and every person seemed to be wearing a statement. Jewels, silks, all the luxuries that one could imagine could exist in the world.

Even Liliana was impressed, though she never let that show on her face for a second.

Instead she let her eyes flicker around the room. She watched everyone and anyone, taking in the sight of their faces, the colors they wore, the insignia's that they might have hidden. It was important, something she'd been taught since she'd been young. "That's the Prince of Oban."

She whispered quietly to Evie, pointing out a tall blonde man.

"That is the cousin to the Dynast of Dornoch..." She pointed out a woman with angular features and long raven hair. "That is the Ambassador from Elbion."

Liliana gestured gently to an older man who was speaking to a pair of odd twins. "So interesting. I thought the guest list would be a bit more...drab."

She mused for a moment. "Perhaps there is something bigger going on tonight."

Everleigh tilted her head ever so slightly, her chin inclined towards Liliana’s voice. Gray eyes darted over at each person that the Noble had pointed out, and the initiate was quite impressed how Liliana just knew who these people were. Really, Everleigh couldn’t tell who was who just upon one look alone, but Liliana didn’t even have to think. She saw and knew. Everleigh could only relate it to the way she knew the names of various swords and weapons as if recounting her own name.

Something bigger?” Everleigh fully looked at Liliana now, despite not really wanting to tear her eyes away from the people surrounding her. She had just caught sight of a woman in such a unique state of dress and was mesmerized by the way that her dress looked like a silk tapestry with all the flowers and birds sewn into it.

What was the original reason for… this.” Everleigh wasn’t quite sure what to even call this gathering. A party? Hardly seemed appropriate, too common-tongue among those who didn’t even have a fraction of the status or wealth or sense of sophistication. Gala? Everleigh’s brows narrowed a moment in thought. No, perhaps not that either?

"Gala." Liliana said, confirming Everleigh's thoughts.

For a few seconds her lips pursed, as if she were running through scenarios in her heads. In all honesty she had been told that this was another party, a simple little thing that was meant to to introduce the Counselor to a few more nobles.

Now seeing more of the Guest List?

She could tell it was far more than that. "Be very careful, Evie."

Liliana's voice suddenly grew a little bit more serious as she leaned into her companion. The plan had not changed at all, not one little bit. She would still do exactly what cousin Elise had told her to do, but she wasn't about to sacrifice a bishop when she could get away with nothing lost on the chess board.

"These people may not wield our magics." She said quietly. "But they are dangerous in their own way."

Now she just had to make sure she was the only cause of chaos in this place.
