Her pulse raced as Clementine flew as fast as her wings would carry her through the streets of Elbion, dodging buildings with skillful precision acquired by years of practice. Something terribly unfortunate had happened; one of her contracts had been violated just now. She could feel the disturbance in the air; the scales of balanced slightly tipped, unrest prickling at her skin. She vaguely knew where to look by going wherever her unease grew, but she wasn’t sure what exactly had happened just now. What she did know was that someone had not done their duty to protect balance, even though they knew a punishment would await them. It pissed her off completely. The lack of respect, not just for her but for the world, was infuriating.
With a gasp she abruptly came to a halt as it dawned upon her what just had happened. A big tree, normally standing proud on the side of a district square, was being chopped down. Her heart sank as she saw the men with their axes, carelessly hacking away at the only natural thing in this whole damn square. She wouldn’t be able to stop them now, she was just a small pixie after all. She would, however, be able to retaliate - and she knew exactly who was responsible for this mess.
Silas Montpellier had wanted this tree gone for a long time now, to increase visibility for his perfume shop. Not that he lacked customers or had any trouble at all, he just wanted more. The greed of men. With ears tinted red of anger, Clementine flew a block away from the heartbreaking scene. She needed to think over her punishment, though it would most likely involve the stupid perfumery that caused it all.
With a huff the pixie landed on a tavern’s balcony, which overlooked the busy street below. She could hear a rowdy crowd inside, but was not planning on joining them in their foolishness. She looked down, watching the mortals walking by, wondering what was going on inside their heads. How could they not care about the injustice being done right now, just carry on about their lives as if balance wasn’t at stake? She could never understand being so disconnected from the source of life.
