Enslavement: chapter I

Caw..! Caw..! Caw..!

The comforter covering Gideon’s nude body had slipped off sometime during the night, thick, scratching unruly wool irritating him to madness! He remembered, somewhat, the dissatisfaction on finding the uninvited intruder sprawled across his body, clinging for dear life and his limbs shackled by a dead weight that refused to comply.

…. So Gideon Nara did exactly what any reasonable person would do. He concentrated on finding the perfect moment to act and once he did, he snapped a punch across hard while his other hand, fingers parched bone white from gripping, tossed the invasive nightmare off his bed. Then, with a distinctive smile plastered on his lips, he returned to his sleep.

Gideon could not sleep any longer, his eyelids now peeled back, scowling with anger at the window with wide open eyes. He thought he was imagining the scratches, sharp and deadly talons screeching across the glass panel, and had rolled over to continue his sleep, however, imaginary or not, the eerie noise was real. Now grumbling under his breath Gideon cursed the familiar to high heavens, occasionally biting down on his lip and lifted himself off the bed.

“Alright! Alright! I'm coming already, so quit being a nuisance!”

A pair of common pants found in the clothing store for commoners on every street corner was removed from the chair of his study and was promptly put on. He then pulled on his shirt over his head and hurried over to the window, slamming with his fist the glass panel in anger and annoyance.

The familiars were a murder of Crows made of paper talisman, shaped like the animal it was imitating, but white in color and red inscriptions scrawled all over. The 8 Paper Gods was a forbidden technique exclusively used by the Nara clan in Alliria City, a secret known only to the Branch Family, to modernize and make practical the art of runes. They had succeeded, however, the cost required for using the forbidden technique was rather expensive and time consuming.

With one eyelid closed Gideon opened the window, swinging the glass panel outward towards the street and then examined the creature.

A voice recording started once the window opened and a single crow hopped inside. The familiars pupils swirled around in circles, slowly at first, before speeding up and the inscriptions scrawled on the paper glowed as it activated. It's mouth opened wider and wider, creaking in protest from the forceful action of activation in the standard operating procedures until a familiar voice devoid of emotions could be heard.

The message was quite clear to Gideon: there was a mission of high priority needing his unique talents and failure would equal the dethroning of the clan – and his death in the most miserable and cruelest manner by family members.

Gideon sighed. The mission required him to gather information on his target from a distance, a stakeout essentially, to determine the smallest of details of their operations before he did any actual espionage work and infiltrated the base. In essence Gideon would be wasting weeks after weeks or even precious months gathering small nuggets of information to understand how the Williams Trade Company's command structure aligned itself and how their operations worked.

“How frustrating!” He huffed, eyes squinting up at the ceiling.
