The vesperai are dying.

The death of a people is a slow one, but this emissary has foreseen it. Recently, fertility has completely ceased. No more hatchlings, no more vesperai children are born.

Not since the Aboletha's Eye glowed. Something has changed in the Stalagmite Sea. The emissary predicted this doom, and is predicting its further consequence. The elders will not listen to him. They believe that given enough time, the flesh-gods aboletha will bestow upon them their chlidren.

It has led the emissary to drastic measures. To seek understanding, a cure, anything far above. His visions have brought him all the way to the surface, to that most unlikely of places.
