Tariq
One of the most fearsome things to be discovered in Balkh were the elephants. Giants with tusks the size of a good Anirian mast that should shred a man in two with a single strike. They could be commanded by a small team who would sit upon their back with a Pilot at the helm. It was near impossible to kill one. Whereas a single well placed blow to the neck might kill a horse, the elephants seemed to see our blades as little more than irritating insect bites. We wasted numerous arrows on the beasts before discovering they were quite harmless without their Pilots. It was still a hard task indeed, with them perched to high, to kill the men without angering the beast but King Jorah was quite determined to have these creatures and people be a part of the Empire.
"Think of the Cortosi fear when they see these," he would tell me.
King Jorah unfortunately died before he could see his vision come to light, but his son inherited his fathers passion and was far more cunning. Instead of waging open war on the Balkhanese, he had their Chieftain and his wife murdered by Dreadlords during a Parley Feast. He then married their daughter to his youngest, most loyal son.

Overview
Tariq favours his homelands style of dress, choosing to wear his hair long and braided and favouring wooden or gold jewellery. He is relatively tall compared to most Southern Anirians as is the trait from the Northern cities, but despite this he never comes across as looming or daunting in appearance. The latter is only due to his easy smile and quick laugh.
Tariq is a firm favourite amongst the 44th which earnt him the position of Bannerman early on in his career. He has great pride in his country and fellow soldiers and is often the one seen comforting newer recruits after their first kill, or teaching them the best spots to pitch their tent furthest from the Commanders snoring.
One day, he wishes to return to the Northern army and become a Pilot, much like his father before him. For now, however, his youth and desire to see more of the world keeps him in the 44th West.
