The Bastard Warlock of Falwood

Half-elven exile of Falwood nobility, Serelai Virelle is a wanderer whose grace and cruelty are both learned defenses. Scorned by her mother’s kin and bound by blood to an exiled Duanann once of the Autumn Court, her power manifests in the element of fire at the behest of her patron. Often seen as arrogant, rude or self-centered, she is simply what survival made her.

Appearance

Serelai carries the poise of someone raised to be watched, every movement deliberate, every glance measured. Her mixed heritage shows in the fine, sharp lines of her face: elven grace softened by human warmth. Her eyes are a vibrant green that shimmer violet when her pact stirs, and her hair falls long and black.

Though her travels have left her gear worn, she maintains a kind of effortless elegance and eerie beauty — often gently enhanced by her glamour abilities — a sense of elven nobility that refuses to die. She dresses in black, layered silks and leathers, practical yet undeniably theatrical. Around her neck hangs a black gemstone, an old gift from her estranged birth mother, supposedly bearing magical properties that she has yet to discover.

Skills and Abilities

Warlock Magick:
Through her pact, Serelai channels her fae patron’s gifts through the primal elements of fire. Her control of flame is both art and a weapon, from dancing lights to burning jets. Her fire burns gold-red, carrying a faint scent of petrichor and smoke. With focus, she can turn destructive flame into purifying warmth, closing wounds or cleansing corruption through painful but healing heat. Her pact also allows her to weave illusions, from hiding herself in plain sight or appearing as a wild beast, to changing the image of a stone into pure gold or making a shoe appear as a hawk.

Fae Language:
Taught by her patron from a young age, she is fluent in the language of spoken and written Ïzä, though never discusses it with anyone other than her patron herself.

Courtly Grace:
Raised among elven nobility, Serelai retains poise, eloquence, and a talent for reading people’s intentions; skills she wields like weapons.

Silver Tongue:
Her wit and charm make her a master manipulator when she chooses, able to disarm, provoke, or seduce with equal ease.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:
  • Elemental Skill: Her command of fire allows her to adapt quickly, from creating barriers to striking with overwhelming power.
  • Social Prowess: Years of court life honed her intuition and charisma. She can lie beautifully, flatter persuasively, and read danger in a glance.
  • Iron Will: Survival and exile have made her resilient. Pain, rejection, and isolation only strengthen her resolve.
Weaknesses:
  • Emotional Walls: She hides her vulnerability so fiercely that it isolates her, pushing away those who might genuinely care.
  • Unstable Power: Her pact magic is tied to the health and mood of her exiled patron. When her fae weakens, her own strength and skill falters.
  • Fear of Abandonment: She clings to relationships or sabotages them before they can fail her, both outcomes often self-destructive.
  • Pride: She refuses help even when she needs it, convinced that appearing weak will make her disposable again.

Personality

A paradox wrapped in fine silk, Serelai is both dazzling and difficult, a woman who uses poise as armour and sharp wit as a shield. She delights in the dramatic, enjoys beauty for beauty’s sake, and flirts as easily as she breathes. Yet beneath the performance lies someone deeply afraid of rejection and loss.

She hides her vulnerability behind sarcasm and indulgence, turning her pain into a performance. When her walls drop, she’s capable of startling tenderness, the reality of which terrifies her more than any battle ever could. She mistrusts authority, pities idealists, and quietly yearns for a place that feels like home. Yet living a life solely on the road has deprived her of this.

Her relationship with her Duanann patron is unusual, being almost entirely a positive one. Serelai views her patron as the mother she never had in Lady Virelle, and grew up learning about much of the world through the fae's guidance.

Notable Possessions

  • Black Gemstone Pendant - A mysterious pendant once given to her by her mother Lady Ilywen Virelle, said to possess magical properties of some kind. To date, she has yet to discover what those properties are.

Biography

Serelai Virelle was the product of scandal and broken rules. Her mother, Lady Ilywen Virelle — matriarch of Clan Virelle, an isolated, minor elvish clan deep in the forests of Falwood — broke local tradition by taking a human lover, a scandal that stained their house and sent the clan into chaos. Serelai’s birth brought no joy, only whispered blame, suspicion and, eventually, a smoldering resentment. She grew up hidden in her family’s lakeside manor, taught to be graceful, silent, and invisible.

As a child, she began to find solace in the forests of Falwood. There, among the ancient trees, she met a strange figure, a woman of impossible beauty and waning power, a Duanann who did not share her name, only that she was a weak and shamed hermit. Once of the Autumn Court, the fae had been exiled for a treachery she did not commit, and had since lived alone in solitude.

Serelai, too young to understand fear, offered kindness, and over time they became unlikely companions — the lost child and the fallen fae. The Duanann taught her fragments of glamour, of how the world bends when spoken to correctly. When Serelai came of age, they sealed their bond in blood and name, a pact of survival between exile and exile, made in apparent good faith between both patron and warlock. As far as Serelai could understand, the Duanann had a genuine love for her.

When her newfound power first manifested, the Virelle court panicked. The bastard of Falwood had somehow become an even worse scandal, now touched by forbidden magic. She was exiled soon after. Her mother never intervened.

Serelai vanished into the wider world, guided only by her patron's whispers of assurance and instruction. To Serelai, the Duanann was her true Mother, and this became the name she used for her. Now she wanders Arethil as a warlock and hedge-sorceress — part scholar, part temptress, part survivor — her heart torn between two worlds that never truly wanted her.
