Renji ventured into the depths of hell to save his lost love, but returned in failure, possessed by a yokai of death named Yaraka. Each time Renji is mortally felled, he rises up, but every death costs years of his life in accordance with the severity of the wound. Eventually he will die of old age and his soul will become part of the yokai's realm, but whether that is today or tomorrow remains to be seen.

The yokai has also cursed the swordsman with other abilities, which he has yet to discover.
