After failing his trial The Rising but escaping with his life, Ovlan Vare has scoured the seedier parts of Thanasis for another golden opportunity ever since. Deep within the taverns, gambling dens, brothels, illegal fighting pits, criminal syndicates and other houses of ill repute, Ovlan has supplanted dragon riding for games of chance, mastering cards, dice, race- and fight betting and any other scheme he might come up with for a quick coin.

So far, his endeavours have netted him a miniature draconic creature, a cockatrice, Scarly, ever faithful and ever tuned to his master's whims. Most of the time.

He is known as a vagrant within its walls, a charlatan whose infamy forces him to constantly seek out new faces and new games of chance.
