The Mortal Life of Ophelia
Hundreds of years ago, Ophelia was born, Ófelína Ulfhednar- the youngest child, and only daughter to the Ulfehednar clan. Her father, Askel Ulfhednar, was the chieftain of Aurenholde, and although he sought to use them as political pawns, to secure alliances through marriage, he cherished his daughter and five sons dearly. Nevertheless, he still held them to his strict expectations of their society. Despite this, Ófelína was terribly willful and independent, often joining her brothers in adventures deemed forbidden for a female to attend, learning to fight, and dreaming of a life beyond marriage and serving another.
Her mother, Astrud, had been a shieldmaiden in her youth, but had abandoned battlefields when Askel chose her as his wife and to raise their children. Astrud instilled in Ófelína that it was her destiny to lead a family, to abandon all her silly little dreams and do what was expected of her. At 16, she was betrothed to a young man from a nearby clan. A young warrior named Ivar. It was, perhaps, a rare blessing that their love was genuine unlike the arranged marriages of her brothers or even her parents. Happiness was short-lived, however, for on the eve of their wedding, Ivar was killed by an unknown man, leaving Ófelína heartbroken and robbed of the future she had envisioned.
Years followed, but Ófelína buried herself in the duties of her own family, taking on a caretaker role for her sibling's children, and learning skills to become a healer. Suitors came and went, always admiring her beauty and wit, but she rejected them all with an unwillingness to love and lose ever again.
The Fall of Aurenholde
She was twenty-two when Aurenholde was attacked by a rival clan, blaming them for the death of Ivar. The assault came in the dead of night, and left the settlement in flames. She fought alongside her brothers to defend what was theirs, but they were all quickly overwhelmed. Her mother had been killed in the chaos, her father soon after. She never saw her nieces or nephews again. Ófelína was taken captive, but separated from two of her brothers who had been spared from the carnage.
For months, she endured unspeakable torment as a prisoner. She had been told her brothers had managed to escape and so her captors took extra pleasure in torturing her, as if their escape had been her fault. Just as they had been preparing to add her body to the pit of corpses in Aurenholde, a mysterious figure appeared and damned her for eternity. It hadn't been an offer, no option, no choice. As darkness took over her vision, and death crept through her veins, he sunk his teeth into her neck and drained her of her own blood before forcing his down her throat.
