Biography
Gabriel was born in Vel Anir to a wealthy noble family. Since the day he was born he was a blessing, a bright spot in his parents lives. He was given the best education by the finest tutors who taught him everything from language and academics to swordplay and horseback riding.Growing up he had lots of friends, his extroverted tendencies and joyous personality were simply infectious to those around him and hardly a single person could find anything about him to hate.
But his family had a secret, and he was the focus of it. He was born loved by magic, a natural mage through and through, magic was nearly every bit a part of him, but because of the Dreadlord initiative this fact could never come to light lest they find Gabriel and take him to be torn apart by the academy. His parents couldn't bare the thought of the bright spot in their lives and the lives of so many people becoming darkened.
Everyone, friends, family, wet nurses, servants, guards, doctors, neighbors, if they couldn't be bribed to be quiet or sworn to secrecy they had to be convinced to leave without telling a soul.
The plan worked, though it had to constantly be tweaked, especially as he grew older and his powers awoke further. He knew he had to hide his powers but that became increasingly more difficult with little chance to exercise it and no training to tame it. A new plan was formed by Gabriel's father, a plan to relocate to a safer country where magic was practiced more freely and where his son wouldn't be taken away from him.
Elbion became the target for their new home. Little by little Gabriel's father began liquidating and moving his assets, setting up a new home and a new beginning in Elbion.
But those plans never came to fruition. In spite of their carefully laid plans, bribes, and precautions, someone slipped. Gabriel had just turned eleven not days before officials from the Dreadlord academy began inquiring at the families doorstep, asking if a magical talent was being hidden there.
His parents denied it of course, but no one was foolish enough to think that the officials believed them. It was premature, but they had to leave, get Gabriel out of Vel Anir as quickly as possible.
A guard and carriage was arranged, the packing was rushed, but in the night they were on their way out of the city. Gabriel and both of his parents.
But that carriage never made it out of the city. It was attacked, the guard wasted, the carriage set to flames. His parents told him to run while they gave their lives to hold off the attackers, in the panic Gabriel found himself fleeing through the streets and alleys aimlessly, having no idea where he was going or what he was doing.
At some point he must have fallen asleep, because when he awoke it was morning and he found himself in a barrel. He was on his own and now without any support, but for some reason his spirit wasn't crushed. He vowed he would make something of himself someday. And his parents, whether they were alive or dead, he would make them proud.
He spent a year on the streets. During that time he was able to collect some discarded valuables that he could trade for new garb, and then he sold his noble clothing for some good coin which left him sitting pretty good for the time, but he didn't let himself get complacent. The search for him by the Dreadlord initiative continued but due to his sheltered life nobody was able to recognize him, and any who did had already been carefully persuaded one way or another to not reveal him.
But such arrangements couldn't last forever, and word had gotten out that Gabriel's parents were dead. The bribes would stop flowing and the tongues would loosen.
Gabriel wasn't unprepared though, during that year he managed to accomplish a little, carving out a little place for himself in the slums by making friends with some of the other urchins. This also gave him a little tap on the pulse of the city, and he was able to track the officials progress in their search for his magical abilities, the magical abilities that he was now practicing with in secret and learning how to wield efficiently.
Lore & Magic
His magic comes directly from the blood in his veins and every cell and fiber of his body.It acts like a muscle that he can tap into and use like another part of his body, instinctively and without a second thought.
If he uses it too much he becomes tired, like he would if he were to carry something too heavy.
And if he continues to use it while he's tired the magic will begin looking for other ways to fuel his power, and it might take that price out of his flesh.
