Castulo Arnal
Appearance and Equipment
* Long brown hair, full beard with mustache, pale green eyes, tanned skin, 5'8", average build though somewhat honed by his soldierly activities.
* Usually wears a leather jacket with a fur-lined collar, light padded armor beneath; bracers, greaves, spaulders. His cloak, ragged and frayed at its edges, has seen some better days, but carries a touch of sentimental value.
* Usually armed with his longstock crossbow and a backup dagger.
Skills and Abilities
Crossbowman: Ranged combat is Castulo's preference, and he'd much rather stay either far away or high up and out of reach when it comes to fights. He's a fairly good shot, adept at reloading quickly and maintaining a respectable volume of fire, and has a good tactical sense for vantages with great positional advantage for whatever task is at hand. Certainly not adverse to setting up an ambush and leveraging speed and surprise to their fullest extent.
Career Soldier (and Career Rogue): Castulo makes his living in volunteering for every state levy in Gild, whether it be for a full war or answering a Praetor's call to fill the ranks of a maniple for a smaller scale mission. There are in this lifestyle, of course, gaps in employment, which Castulo fills by engaging in various shady and sordid affairs, whether of the dishonorable or outright criminal variety, both at home in Gild and abroad.
Personality and Characteristics
Major
* Has a mouth that can be as charming as often as it gets him into trouble.
* Usually flippant toward many things, especially if they don't cater to his liking. Generally loose with rules, following them only at his convenience.
* Sociable, likes being the center of attention; enjoys telling a good story and getting his fellows to laugh along with him.
* An improvisor, works well in fast-paced situations, and is good at pulling people together when a plan goes awry. Works through ideas out loud, and isn't afraid to cede ground to a superior idea, which helps with collaboration.
Minor
+ Talks shit to bowmen, especially elven bowmen; keeps that rivalry between crossbowmen and bowmen alive and well.
+ Frequents brothels, and tends to make friends with prostitutes (one of his best prostitute friends got him his cloak as a gift long ago). He has his hedonist leanings.
+ Something of a drunken philosopher, as, despite his leisurely attitude, he can go on about a variety of abstract ideas and concepts and other figurative things.
+ No stranger to conjuring up a scam or a scheme, or engaging in some thievery, robbery, or (his favorite) plundering. The spoils of war or of a raid are always sweetest to him.
+ Likes parks and managed countryside (not so much wild and overgrown land), and at those rare times when he prefers some solitude, or just to relax, he'll have a walk or a nap (especially to work off a hangover) in them.
+ Fences smuggled/stolen/illegal items on the side.
Biography and Lore
Not everyone in Gild is particularly pious. Some render unto Regel exactly what is necessary to maintain appearances, and otherwise are living their lives, day-to-day, far more concerned with earthly pursuits than anything divine.
Castulo's parents, and both his elder sister and his younger sister, are all upstanding Gildans, with piety marking their hearts. But Castulo, after having decided at the age of eighteen to embark on a Gezi and venture out into the wider world, most notably to Alliria, came back a changed man. The ways of Gild seemed to him now rigid and strict, and he knew he was a free and loose soul at heart. Yet Gild was his home, and it was in Gild he decided to stay, whether or not he dispensed with conscientiousness and honor and public spirit, didn't give a shit so much about who used magic, and was far more inclined to one-night-stands than the prospect of starting a family of his own.
Though he's been in and out of jail for drunken disorderliness, though he's been publicly flogged in the Forum on several occasions, Castulo still holds a good cheer about his lifestyle and doesn't begrudge his fellow Gildans anything.
But you know what wouldn't hurt? A grander purpose. Something ultimately to strive for, something where his skills and his mindset would be right at home.
And, as it turns out, Castulo has a devil's luck.
