Initial Biography & Lore Chapter: 0
Born on a ship fleeing a storm, that sums up his childhood years. The Oceananders as they are known to the landbound, those on the mainland, are a stubborn eccentric folk. They like collecting things as they travel to remind them of their voyages and journeys, which become their life. From a very young age, the Vos Manti have a wanderlust of sorts, coming and going with the tide. Some put this down an old curse to weave the drift as they call it, others say it is a calling to bring with them the memories of what was, to take them to new places.
It's not a holy calling to be a trader, it is more a natural instinct, to take things to new places so others can experience them. Amades was never a good trader but he found this out early and was almost destined to be left behind on the islands, a fate many who hear the wanderlust calling would rather avoid. Never settled always wanting to move, always wanting more experiences, these feelings die on the islands and in their enclosed communities, so does part of the Vos Manti soul.
He did find he had a skill. At the age of eight, when most of the ship’s crew fell under an enchanting song, the young boy was unaffected. That day it was discovered he had something of an iron will, which was not open to suggestion by magical means. He was still an impressionable boy and in some ways is more easy to manipulate than others by word of mouth but by magic, for whatever reason, it is very difficult to sway his stubborn single-minded nature.
Saving the ship and crew that day, this was covered up as a freak occurrence, for a number of years, though it did earn him a place as the captain's favorite, and a good thorough teaching of cartography! Covered up that is until it happened again at a card game in his late teens, a cheater was manipulating others via magic to win coin. Amades was unaffected, and that was where he was spotted by the veil order. Of course, the cheat lost his temper and his life that day from an angry patron, but Amades had a different fate. To be recruited by the order of the veil, an organization dedicated to protecting people from the things out there they shouldn’t see, or rather shouldn’t see them. Not the common bandit or rogue mage, but the mystery the spirit is hiding down the cave. If it's stopped there nobody is any the wiser and the community nearby never suffers the ill effects. The infection of the mind that will not see the light of day, or the curse on the box that shouldn’t be opened.
This is called keeping the Veil, his training, his life and its the mission he sailed away on. The start of a conspiracy so vast and chilling that it may never be truly understood.
