Alteria Eos
An old scholar from a dead order, Alteria spends the rest of his days on the road searching for the phantom of his lover in order to finally put her to rest.
Appearance
Despite his age, Alteria remains well-built for the outdoors, with a body limber and sturdy, whittled by his time on the road and whatever harsh weather he had to endure. His head has a messy mop of white hair, cut unevenly and short, with a beard and moustache combo that hides the reminder of a trio of gashes on his throat.
His face has started to wrinkle, but in his eyes lies a youthful glow.
He is often seen wearing darkened green robes, weathered by the elements.

Skills and Abilities
Trance Casting, Runic Magic -- An experimental discipline that draws from the basics of runic magic, yet aimed to eliminate the required mediums in order for the mage to conjure and appraise magic purely with their minds. The discipline got its name from the trance-like state practitioners of the art are required to be in in order to properly use it. In theory, when the mage is in a trance, he is able to see traces of spells in his vicinity in its runic form, allowing him to decipher which runes to draw from and cast the same spell. However in practice, the mage must first filter out all the noise to find the marks and replicate them in his mind as close to perfect as possible.
Due to the difficulty of such a feat, Alteria found it easier to simply use runic magic, and keeps a journal on him which has all the references to spells he knows, though they are ciphered.
Swordsmanship -- As a young lad, before he found his passion in magic, Alteria was a novice swordsman receiving secondhand training from a nobleman's son who he befriended in his youth. Though he doesn't carry a sword with him, he's found that at least his muscles remember the basics of swordplay.

Personality
Alteria is an aimless wanderer, making his way from one place to another like a leaf blowing in the breeze. To him, the time to settle has long passed, and a weight on his heart keeps him from thinking otherwise.
Though one might think that he is a carefree soul, he is actually quite meticulous and easily stressed out. It really doesn't help his state of mind that he's pretty adventurous and gets himself into tight spots with his exploration. He's always had a fascination of ancient ruins and what artefacts they may hold, and is always on the lookout for opportunities to use his somewhat rare skillset.
He's gets pretty vague with his past, partly due to the shame of having wasted half his life pursuing a magical discipline that might not even amount to much, but its that shame that also drives him to want to find a purpose for Trance Casting other than it being yet another novel way to do magic.
But of all the regrets he's had in his life, the heaviest is the phantom of his lover, who he believes to still be roaming the lands, awaiting to be finally put to rest. This is the strongest driving force in his wanderings, seeking out rumored hauntings any time he's heard whispers of them.

Biography & Lore
Alteria was born in Elbion as the son of a city guard and a herbalist. They both wanted him to be more than a simple peasant, and so invested a lot into what education they could afford him, to the detriment of his interests. He had looked up to his father's daring tales of apprehending thieves and running bandits off of caravans, but he was never taught how to handle a sword.
That was until he met a young noble when they were both 10. Rezian, was lost in his part of the city and Alteria had brought him someplace he recognized, and that was the start of their friendship. As they grew up, Rezian was more than happy to teach Alteria a thing or two about the sword, but eventually his passions turned towards the arcane. A shift that Rezian had no interest in, though they still remained friends.
In his 20's, Alteria joined a new order of mages under the tutelage of Kirin Mertz. This order was imaginatively called the Order of Trances, and Kirin claimed that this was going to be the future of magic: Casting spells as fast as one could think, each one a different configuration. Seeing another's magic and flawlessly replicating it. Shattering any barrier with a flick of the wrist. These were the promises Kirin offered to those who would take up the challenge to actually research this new form of spell casting.
It proved too good to pass up. And so Alteria pledged allegiance to the new order and began experimenting under Kirin's wisdom. His meticulous nature allowed him to quickly understand the nature of runes, and soon the nature of the Trance. In the five years he's been with the order, he had grown close to one of the other disciples, a woman from another city named Triell.
Ten years after the order's foundation, it was suddenly set upon by an unknown group. Whether they were bandits or hired mercenaries, the outcome was that the order fell. They had raided the Order of the Trances' sanctuary, butchering the disciples and their leader. Alteria was one of the few survivors.
Triell died in defense of the sanctuary.
Driven by grief, Alteria used a spell that was banned by Kirin himself. It was a resurrection spell, needing only a single life to bring back another. He had found one of the people that attacked them, barely breathing, but still alive, so he was chosen as sacrifice. The spell had succeeded, for a while.
Something about the spell had an adverse effect on the subject, causing a horrendous shedding of the vessel to make way for a ghastly phantom to crawl forth. Alteria was too stunned to defend himself and with a single swipe of the phantom's claws, Alteria's throat was sliced open.
But as luck would have it, Rezian, now one of the guards himself, saw the conflict brewing outside the walls of the sanctuary and gathered a force to keep an eye on the situation, though they were too late to save the order.
Alteria survived with the help of healing magic, but feeling like he's lost everything, he just left town the moment he was able. Though there was also another thing that kept him from staying: the phantom of his lover. He couldn't bring himself to rest until Triell herself was laid to rest. No matter how long it took him, he wasn't going to stop until he freed her.
